Just installed a Techmount for my zumo 550... I didn't want to use the Ram mount setup that goes on the mirror mount (I think its clumsy looking)  I didn't think i would be able to use a handlebar mount because i had a steering damper on there, but i came up with a nice solution. I used a standard 7/8 bar mount Techmount with the 3.5 inch stem, but i had to have a custom top plate made to orient the amp holes pattern in the right direction. I drew something up, sent it over to Mike at Techmount, and he was able to make me what i needed. Now  I have a nice compact, centrally located Zumo that clears my damper, my ignition, and does not block my gauges.  BIG THANKS to  Mike at Techmount!! [clap]

Here are some pics on my 2004 620 with a matris M2 Damper:

Nice Job.

Spankee where ya been hiding?
Why do roaches always die on their back?

That because the survivors flip them over to steal their sneakers and wallets.

SPANKEE

heh --you know where i am ;)

all work and no play makes spanks a dull grrl.

finally got inspired today to start a few mods. rizoma mirrors and cox oil cooler are next.

Spankee,
Could you please post the part numbers and what you sent to Techmount.  I've been thinking of something similar but hadn't figured out how to do it.
TIA  [thumbsup]

the part i used was 30996 it fits 7/8 bars. I needed the one with a longer extension (3.5 inch shaft) so it would clear the damper. If you dont have a damper, you can probably use the mount that has the 2.5 inch shaft (lol--this sounds bad i know)  you can play around with all the joints to get a nice range of viewing angles.

If you have an S*R youll have the Magura handlebar, and need the 1 1/8 bar mount i think.

The standard mount plate looks like this:

I needed the amp pattern holes at the other end, like this:

they made me a custom plate from my mock up and this worked perfectly.(he added the camera mount hole back in )

Give Mike at techmounts a call/email and they will definitely help you out!
good luck!

So it mounts to the handlebars directly under the damper?  very cool.   [thumbsup]

fyi...that aluminum plate is soft like butter.  I took a hand drill and drilled mine for some custom mounting of my Ant racing camera setup on the 1098.  Supah!
If you love your bike, set it free.
If it comes back to you, you've
probably high-sided.

nice! have any of you guys ever heard of the ram mount?

herm

i have the ram aqua box for my GPS, since my unit is not water proof. got it this winter, so no on the road experience with it.
didnt buy the ram _mount_ though.
instead, i fabed my own mounting bracket for it with some aluminum stock from home depot. it bolts into the holes where the stock bar risers used to be.

I am using their 1.5 inch low profile ram mount (in a mirror hole) for my radar:

great product and personally tested to 160 indicated and is rock solid....

I'm not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example!

yup. I am familiar with the ram mounts, for the most part they are quick and easy to disconnect .. I just didnt like how clunky it would have been where i needed to mount it, and i didnt want to mount it on the left mirror or clutch reservior.  If i had a direct way to go to the steering stem nut i would have opted for that. I know someone makes a really nice aluminum stem mount for that application. nice bike btw :D
