For those of you that don't remember or didn't care, I bought a beautiful s2r1k last April and torched it 22 days later in a nasty crash that also involved my buddy on his brand new Tuono (I took him out while crashing).  I replaced the bike with a Triumph Thruxton and have enjoyed it fairly well.

But I have missed Ducati.  The sound, the mystique, the cool factor of the bikes.

So today I picked up a 99 Monster 750.  Not the most modern or coolest bike of those of us here.  But gets me back in the Duc game and it was really reasonable.  The bike has been meticulously maintained for all 27k miles and I picked it up for $3500.  That is with F&R stands, battery tender, manual, etc.  I am happy with the deal and look forward to many more happy italian moto days. The bike is cosmetically in really decent shape and the owner lowered all the gauges/headlight for a much more sleak look.  It also has clip ons to help that look.

One quick question:  The throttle is really stiff.  It is not notchy and does not seem to have spots that "grab" more than others.  Just really stiff.  Any ideas for a remedy?  Lube the cables?  Grease the tube?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome back.

Sorry, don't know the answer to your question.  Try posting the question in the Tech Section.  You should get some quick answers there.  Good luck.   [thumbsup]

Disconnect the cable from the grip housing and rotate the throttle to see if that moves freely. Then connect it again but disconnect the cable from the carb, repeat. from that you should be able to determine where your friction is originating from. Could be a simple as the throttle housing being worn and the cable pinching in a grove from use.

hope that helps

i know everyone will have a heart attack about this but i just undid my throttle cable housing and sprayed some WD40 in the tube there and worked the throttle back and forth a bunch of time and that took care of my stiff throttle problem (on an old bike i had)

yep, sometimes parts just want some attention!

I have decided to let a local bike tech look at it.  He isn't going to charge me very much and he is getting quite a reputation for being a superb mechanic of various brands.

Here is a cell phone pic of the beast.  I think she looks great, especially for 3500 bucks with stands, manuals, and other goodies thrown in.

Nice looking bike. Especially for $3500 [thumbsup]

Mother

don't the '99 have a push/pull? i'd pull the cables out of the housing and hit em with some graphite or dry tephlon, worked great on my YZF

ducducgooseme

did you buy your buddy a new tuono?  8)
If you love your bike, set it free.
If it comes back to you, you've
probably high-sided.

Nice looking bike!  If I recall, we live in the same area without a Duc dealer.  What mechanic are you using?
My rides:  2009 M696, couple of cages, a few grass eating get-alongs, and some asics.

Clint at Cycle Parts (Triumph) is the one that fixed it. He quoted me up to two weeks to get to it and it took 24 hours.  It ended up being the cable was routed wrong by the previous owner when he installed clip ons.  He also lubed up the cables and housing.

And no, ducducgooseme, he wanted it back and the damage was around 6k.  He got OZ wheels out of the deal with insurance though.

Ugh...Got the bike back today and had another issue that has taken her out of service.  I will be posting in the Tech section as it appears my starter relay/motor/something is out now.   [bang]  Me and Ducati don't mesh well.
