I moved to San Jose (south Silicon Valley) from Chicago last June and the riding has been great.  There's still work to be found out here and the cost of living isn't higher than Chicago, excluding rent.

NorCal locals seem to think the traffic is bad but they have no idea what traffic is.

Anything north of Los Angeles should be affordable.

...until to you get to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Only 2 drawbacks I see to living in Cali...

If the "Big One" doesn't dump you into the ocean, the state government will once it has sucked you dry. ;)

when it happens, it happens.  at least we don't have a season named after natural disasters, i.e. hurricane season, tornado season, etc.

BTW, a big earthquake means BP would then have beach front property, just saying.

Austin is cool, and it has hills and twisties, so plus one on that.  And of course, it is one of the mini-hubs for technology with AMD, Dell and others being there.  Texas as a whole has been said to be more resistant to the Great Depression II - local unemployment numbers are currently lower than the national numbers, but we will have to see how some of the industries (energy, here in Houston) fare over the next year.
The downside is you have to put up with people insisting on how cool it is to be in Austin all the time.  But, ya know, better to be on the inside of the tent pissing out.  Good luck on the search.  And you're welcome again   ;)
