My commute has some areas of very poor merging every day. Especially the exit that has the truck stop and school bus depot. If there is something that ingrains keeping space and an escape route in your brain, it is almost getting side swiped by a large dump truck full of dirt.

So many people who drive around here just do not pay attention to anything, bike, cars, or otherwise.

I definitely appreciate the power/acceleration from my 696 (compared to my old bike) to get out of some of those situations. I hate the parts of the commute where you have to drive 80 or 35. There is no other choice.

I did about a ~90 mile ride yesterday and definitely set the pace for the guys that rode with me. It was frustrating for them though. I kept it kosher around 70 mph.  [moto]
We couldn't have asked for better weather.

The R1 and 848 were not designed to be driven around 70 mph.  [laugh]

Good looking group of bikes right here...

I have never understood the idea of going fast for the sake of going fast... Bike, Car... whatever... going one direction quickly is fun for a second then it is gone... and to make it worse is trying to do that in heavy traffic.  Atlanta is fill of squids flying down interstate with no concern for anything other then the adrenaline rush...   I love to push the limits... but on a track is the place to do it, where you can hone your skills and work on that perfect lap.

On interstate I usually keep it with traffic... whatever keeps me in a position that is not pissing off traffic, does not stand out to  [leo], and keeps me in position to watch and keep my distance the morons who have a hard enough time keeping their car on the road without having to look for other cars and bikes.  In residential... keep it at a comfortable safe speed... usually speed limit or less... kids are unpredictable... on deserted winding roads... i will pick up the pace if the sight lines are there and traffic is minimal...
