DEVO!

I was riding to work this morning on the freeway and for no reason my motor just died, all my indicator lights were still on. I pulled over to the emergency lane and tried to restart and nothing it would not start. I checked my fuel and I had half a tank pulled all my fuses one by one and they were all fine. Tried to restart after I checked the fuses and it started. Ran fine all the way to work stopped at the gas station after I git off the freeway and it started up agan no problem. What happened? has this happened to anyone else? I am kinda freaked out now I dont want it to cut off again on the freeway. Any one know of any possible causes?

Oh one more thing I wanted to add no sputtering no popping or surging it just died  like the power just got cut off in an instant.

Thanks ,
Dean

Does it crank when you push the starter button?

if I had a vagina...I'd never leave the house

Vent lines might be clogged. Might want to check them out. Run a full tank of gas and don't open the gas cap till you get the empty light. If you have a clogged vent line you will get a sucking noise when you open the fuel cap..

DEVO!

Yes it cranked fine its not the battery. I will try running a full tank and see what happens.

Were you on the throttle when it died?

Was the bike warmed up?

My bike has stalled on the freeway after rolling off the throttle, when the bike is still cold.

Sounds like a vent problem.  If it happens again and the bike restarts after opening the cap it is a vent problem.  As EEL said, also listen as you open the cap.  Also listen for the fuel pump hum.

DEVO!

Ok it did it again today! Last night I checked all the wires and everything looks fine, I will have to check the vent hoses, where are they exactly?

Back/underside of the tank, most likely on the right side.  Do you have the emissions canister still?   Follow both of the black hoses on that part of your bike and make sure none are crimped shut.

Mine did this as well... I took the bike to ducati and they told me it was bad air/fuel mapping and needed retuning.   :-\   either way it was warranty and they took care of it a few days ago.... Im still waiting to ride her again to see if they actually did fix everything.

It really does sound like an electrical problem to me not venting.  Usually when it is fuel/air/vacuum there is some kind of sputter or surging.  With an intermittent electrical problem things just stop.  Check the grounds for corrosion and tightness.

I would agree with this. Usually when its a vent problem, it acts as if is running out of gas (it is, even though its in the tank), sputtering, losing power, then dying. Although, would this be the case on a F.I. bike if the pump were to suddenly stop, cutting pressure to the injectors?

needtorque

If the pump dies the bike may spit and sputter for a sec till the fuel pressure completely drops off the line.  But if the electrical problem were in the injectors then it would just die.  Many other things could cause instant death too.  Bad ground, immobilizer glitch, ecu brain fart to the fuel or spark, etc....

The same exact thing happened to me, it got to the point where it wouldn't start.  I trailered it to my local shop and it turned out to be a blown fuse.  However, when it first shut down, I checked all the fuses.  So my conclusion is that water got into the ignition somehow and occasionally shorted the ignition.  Then finally it blew the fuse.  I rode through a pretty heavy rainstorm a day before this all happened, hence my water in the ignition assumption.

Easiest thing first.Check battery connections, clean and make sure ground strap AND positive wire are  clean and secure. This accounts for over 90% of issues on cars and bikes.
Next check vent from tank and make sure it is not blocked or pinched in any way.
Always assume its something easy ,because usually it is.
Happy trails!

also it - might - be the rearward fuel injector relay going; the 2 relay plugs located beside the left side of the battery; I beleive there identical so a quick test would be just bo swap then around then run the bike ... I dont beleive this would do any harm ...
