We really want to get out to the Cape and see a lift off before the shuttle program is halted at the end of this year. It's so hard to plan though given the delays involved with launches.

It truly boggles my mind that the shuttle is being retired. The new rockets that NASA keeps exploding in launch attempts are (at least in appearance) throwbacks to the days of the Appolo program. How can so many scientits not come up with a better design? It's wild. Don't they have a room with brainiacs just thinking up crazy new shuttle designs???

When I was stationed in Norfolk, we used to get underway to go sit off the coast of Florida and watch the shuttles take off (I saw 2). We were there "just in case." It was cool to watch.

shuttle replacement (orion/constellation) isn't due until 2015...

they're actually trying to decide whether to accelerate that program or extend the shuttle until orion is available.

something about us not wanting to depend on the russian space program for travel to/from the iss during the gap in service.
