Hello,

I'm looking at a used 2009 696.  The owner has only one key and the code card.  Is that enough to get a new key made from the dealer?  Any one knows how much it will cost?

Thanks!

The dealer can sell you a key blank, and it they can't cut it there any locksmith can cut it to match the one you have.  I'm not sure what you need to program the new key though!

Where is the other key - you might ask yourself Huh?

I wouldn't trust my bike to be safe with another key somewhere out there bang head

It might be just me being overcautious, but I would ask for a new lock system/fresh programming of both new keys - just to make absolutely sure no one else could use the old missing key.

Good point.  However to change the the lock system on the duc is quite costly. I believe it starts at $1200 for new dash + keys for 848 and  could be more than $2000 for older duc because ECU had to also be replaced.  Ouch.

Anyway back to the topic, anyone knows if the code card + one black key is enough for me to get a new key programmed and how much is a new key cost?

Thanks!

It cost me about $60 for a 696 key from the dealership. I then paid $30 to have the key laser cut from some key cutting shop. One key is all you need to get a new key cut. You will need two keys and the code to program the keys. So yes, you will have everything you need in order to get two functioning keys. Here is a link to programming the keys http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=20873.msg372678#msg372678

The key could have been lost anywhere; a hotel room, one night walking around town, at the movie theater. After you reprogram the keys they won't be able to start the bike without the code. (They could unlock the steering and walk it off though, which would probably get less attention than firing the bike up.)  So the only person who should be able to do that would be the current owner. If intended to steal the bike, I think they would have a made a third copy of the key to keep rather than just not give you one. They would be the first suspect if the bike went missing. Yet, I suppose it is a possibilty, I've met some dumb people.

So, I finally got a blank key from Common Wealth Ducati.  I'm having a little trouble finding a locksmith that can cut the key however.  Is there specific special tool that needs to be used?  It seems that the locksmith I went to said that their router can't get such a sharp edge on the inside cut as in the factory cut keys.

Any suggestion?  There's one more locksmith that I got recommended to, but they are closed until Tuesday.   bang head  bang head  bang head.

a normal door cutting machine wont have the machine, youll need a more specialized machien to cut it, so you can just wait until tuesday ( dont know why you would be in a hurry). I bought my key online off this guy who sells keys for all types of vehicles, $25 shipped, had it cut at a local keymaker (the dmv also has cutters there that specialize in cutting auto keys) but then i lost the spare in my room and never got it programmed. :p

I guess I've been having a single key for almost 2 months now, a few more days isn't gonna change much.  I just wanted to get it over with, I guess.

As a side note, the 696 key costs $65 (there's some on ebay now going for $89, so this isn't cheap right now...)  It's a different style than the old Duc.  It's sorta like BMW/Audi keys that has inside cuts.  I heard they were called "laser cut" but from what I have seen they simply use a router-like cutters in the shop.  My local shop however, isn't confident they can replicate the same cut as the original key on the blank.

I'm having the same issue. I lost my key, paid the $68 only to find
my shop can not cut it. They said any locksmith should be able to
cut it. NOT. I am working on about my 25th store with no luck.
The middle groove seems to be the problem. Apparently the groove
is so slender in does not allow the wider cuts without deforming the
center groove. As soon as I say the blank cost $70 they have all
said I better find the proper cutter. I even offered to buy the correct
bit for two guys, but they both said they have all the available bits
for their machines. This blows.  bang head
What is worse is I know I will find my "lost" key as soon as I get the
new one cut. For now I have a $70 cocktail stirrer
