background: 06' monster 620, my first bike, have very little knowledge of bikes

problem: i hit the start button, the bike starts but does not run smooth and it sounds like the starter is stuck on or constantly trying to start even though the bike has already started. the rpm's jump up and down.  it runs for maybe a minute and then when the starter noise stops the bike stops seconds later.

last time i rode my bike was october and all seemed fine, put it in the garge for the winter (chicago winter that is) with no battery trickle and no stable in the gas. did some work on it where i took the generator cover off, clutch cover, exhaust, some other little misc. pieces. got it all back together today and that is what i have.

does anyone know what the problem might be and how to go about fixing it?

my thoughts (which really are guesses) are that it's not the battery because all the lights work and the engine turns over. might be the gas but not sure because the starter stays on. any thoughts or info would be truely appriecated.

thanks in advance

The problem with diagnosing this is that it sounds like multiple problems.  Maybe your starter solenoid is stuck as that is a frequent issue with ducs.  This would require a new solenoid.  The poor running issues could be related to something that was not reassembled correctly whne you did the minor work.  Not trying to say you are incompetent just saying that we all make mistakes and if I have done work on the bike and previous to said work it was fine but post work something is wrong I usually retrace my steps and make sure all the work was correctly done.

Could be plugs fouled and need replaced or old fuel.
Who insures the FDIC?

oh i'm very incompetent. my focus and thoughts were more on what I DIDN'T DO more so than what i did do, like not charge the battery and not winterize the gas. what happens when you run a bike with bad or old gas? not ignoring that i put something back together wrong of course. the major parts removed were the generator cover, clutch cover, and exhaust (i assume i put these back on correctly) does this sound like a problem consistant with an improper installation of one of those pieces?

my plan is to: get a new battery (i'm due anyway), drain old gas, fill with new gas. and hope that works and not have to go to "plan B" (which i don't have yet). anyone have a diifferent plan of attack for me to try?

Charge and test battery, replace solenoid (assuming your description is accurate), fresh gas and pray to the motorcycle gods.  New plugs wouldn't hurt either.  Do you hear the fuel pump?

what plugs? (yes i'm dumb, bare with me). fuel pump......is that the noise that turns on when you turn the key?  if so, yes i hear it. if not, i'm not sure because it's hard to hear anything over a starter that keep tryin to start

p.s. i prayed to the bike gods before i push the starter this time......i guess they just laughed at me.

p.p.s ONE MORE simptom: if i rev the throttle far or fast it don't really respond all that well. to get it to rev it need to be done slow.

Doesnt sound like the solenoid because when they get stuck, the only way to unstuck it is to smack the relay with a hammer or unplug the battery. and hes had to do neither. But to get to the bottom of it, where is this suppose starter noise coming from? I cant inmagine hearing the sound of the starter over the bikes own noises.

First thing i would try is to replace the spark plugs. That sounds like a commong point to the hesistent starting, randomly dying, and rough idle.

aside from that, one of the 1st things i look at is a stale batch of gas, could of picked up a lot of water over the long winter.

Plug are spark plugs, sorry.  He Man has a point about the solenoid, it does usually take either a rap on the solenoid or disconnecting the battery to get it to stop.  Maybe you need to get someone with a more educated ear to listen.
