I got my 05 S2R 800 at teh beginning of summer and have been having a blast since. the only problem is that I have been thinking about selling it to get an r6/cbr600 since I bent a rim and got quoted 1200 for a new one.  i'm not sure if I am up to owning a bike that costs so much to repair or not.  I like the bike and so does the gf but if it is going to ruin my savings just to keep it rideable, I think I might need to look for a bike that is cheaper to maintain.... what are your guys experiences on maintenance? I haven't had any recent problems, but I am worried that I will run into a problem that will keep my bike in the garage for a long time and idk if I can handle not riding for too long   also if it isn't too much trouble, can someone tell me where to find the maintenance schedule for my bike? thanks.

For 1200 bucks, you can buy a Carbon fiber rim. Seriously? that is why you don't go to the dealership to replace parts like that.

Trust me, it does not cost that much to own or maintain the bike.

I know you're a young guy, you're 20 IIRC. I'm basically in the same boat as you are, 21 yo college student with ducs. I own 2 of em, and i'm working on building a third. 

The service intervals for your bike are gonna be every 6k miles and should run you about 300-400 bucks. Unless you do it yourself, then it is more along the lines of 80.

Seriously, for 1800 you could get a new set of Carrozerias for your bike and sell off your undamaged wheel to recoup some of your loss.  In fact, you might bring the price of the Carro's to 1200 with the sale of your undamaged rim.  You could likely get a few bucks for the bent one too, as there are places that happily repair bent rims for around the order of $150...  

Yes, your Duc will cost you more in maintenance than a CBR600RR, but check with Honda and see what they want for a replacement rim...  The difference isn't too great, and you'd be switching to a bike that is only suited to taking on the occasional curb monkey, not a girl you really like.  but hey, it'd be faster!!  And wheely better by far!  Although I've watched a guy highside a brand new CBR600RR at Buttonwillow right in front of me, and it looked pretty expensive just then.  Mostly compared to the SV I was using to keep up with him...

Dont know what color your s2r is. Your wheels are prob white.  I found a set of grey on the board for almost half. As far as maintenance schedule, Im surprised there isnt a sticky on the tech section.  TOB has it but i dont want to like to it.

I am not sure where you live but an R6 has a lifespan of about 2 months where I live.  They are either crashed or stolen in that time

As for replacement wheel costs, the Yamaha will be just as expensive if you buy factory wheels.  If you really want to see how expensive factory parts are, go to the Yamaha dealer and price the body work, mirrors, lights, etc. that you would damage in a 5 mph drop.  It is enough for the insurance to total the bike.

If you like the R6 better than the Ducati then get one but other than valve adjustments, it will cost the same for maintenance and even more for crash damage.

Thanks for the help! i should have posted this earlier, but I got one for $200 back in october and it needed new wheel bearings and the powder coating is a bit chipped, but it works.  I have the new wheel bearings I just need to get around to putting them in and I probably won't repowdercoat it for a while.  it matches the scraped clutch cover and rear brake with a bolt instead of a nub(I have a new one of those too but for some reason the bushing is just a bit too small to fit the bolt to mount it).  I just ran into a conversation today that brought up all these worries again that I have about my bike.  In the end I will probably keep my monster cause I love it and it is fun to annoy my friends with that loud exaust thanks to the arrows .  I was just mostly looking for some reassurance that it is not as bad as everyone I talk to says it is cause of ducati's bad rep for being expensive as hell.  as far as tob and the maintenance schedule, I would go over there, but I'm banned and I swore that I would never go back   I'm just about to hit 5k miles so I'm glad I posted, I like to keep my things nice and maintained   I do have insurance, but it was bent by hitting a ratchet strap while going 70 that was in the middle of an exit ramp.  I can't have full coverage so it wasn't covered.  a 19 year old male riding a duc isn't the cheapest thing to insure

Unless you're constantly bouncing off the rev limiter, 6000 mile valve checks are waaaaaay too frequent.

Switch insurance companies to Ducati Foremost.  You will learn a 19 year old on a duc is really cheap to insure considering what an r6 or 600rr costs.  One year full coverage for my bike, M1100s, is cheaper than my 6 month premium for my car.
