Hey everyone. I've had my 07 s2r for about 6 months and put close to 1000 miles on it. I figure she's ready for an oil change. What's the best oil I should get around Ga?

I've almost dedicated my life to this question  [roll] and I can honestly say that I don't know ;D

There are different views on whether or not to use synthetic until a new bike has a few thousand miles on it.  Then there are guys who insist that 20W-50 is always better than 10W-40 regardless of Ducati's chart of viscosity vs climate in the owner's manual.

But I don't think you can go wrong with Mobil Racing 4T 10W-40 which is a synthetic.  Or, any good quality motorcycle oil.

There are lots of oil threads and although they're very informative, it seems like every answer just leads to another question.

This always opens up a large can of worms, I personally use the Shell Ultra that Ducati Suggests, it works fine for my bike, I live in a very hot and humid climate, so the oil gets worked very hard, I replace it every 3000km's.

I figure in my S2R 800 it has a lot of work to do,
* It has to lubricate the Engine
* Cool the Engine
* Lubricate the Gearbox
* Clean debris out of the Clutch (Wet Clutch)
* Cool the Clutch

I have never believed in stretching the oil change times out to Ducati's 12000km intervals, I'm a big believer in changing oil very regularly, I strongly suggest customers of the Dealership where I work also change there oil on a regular basis. some do, some don't.
As I say to them even if they don't buy oil from me, just change your oil, use a quality oil and your engine will thank you when your out in the hills banging on the limiter and thrashing the ass out of your machine.

Your are right about opening a large can of worms  :)  For those of us in the states, there is no such thing as Shell Ultra, in spite of the sticker on the crankcase.  It's not imported here. 

But everything else you said fits with my thinking - for what that might be worth...

I like Mobil 1 15-50 every 3-4,000 miles.  But, you shouldn't go wrong following the owner's manual.

+1 on the Mobil. Kinda pricey though. If you go this route try to buy online. Dealers like to charge an arm and a leg. 8)
08' S2R 1K   That was close  damn near lost a $400 hand cart.

I use Motul 7100 10w40 fully synthetic in my M696 and out it goes every 4000kms.   I reckon the real issue is not which good quality oil you use but how often you change it.  But on this subject you're gonna get 1,000 opinions.....

Yea, Amsoil MOTORCYCLE oil is fine.  In hot weather I have used their 20/50.  It used to be rare to find syn with that viscosty.

Royal Purple full syn 10/40 Motorcycle oil.  I've used it for the last three changes for it's rep and it's down the block. Spensive though.

Mobil 1 15/50

Like I think has been said, formulated for bikes is best - additives make a difference here - certain metals, zinc and such for the tranny.

I found a test of motorcycle oils and I believe it was on Amsoil's website. Of course Amsoil came out 1st but surprisingly Mobil 1 came in second overall. If you go to the Amsoil web site and go to the right you will find a comparative testing section. Motorcycle oils are right there. If you don't want to read the whole thing just go to page 24 and the results and ranking are there.

I switched to tractor oils, no EPA standards so it has all the old additive packages. We used to have an oil guy on TOB and it was his tip.
