How do you remove the swingarm?

for a S2R 1000....Remove rearsets, rear wheel, remove the sprocket side, the brake disc side, remove the nut on the right side of the swingarm to loosen up the ride height and suspension, break chain, and pull out?

Don't forget the circlip on the swingarm pivot.

If you don't have the shop manual, download the parts manual.  That's what I used a few years ago when I had the swinger powdercoated.

oh man, i missed that one. had to dig through the dirt just to find it. ill pull out the parts manual...i just need to get a chain breaker now.

Do you have a "rivit" type chain or a "master link" type chain? You only need a chain tool for the "rivit" chains.

no idea, never changed my chain before, its the stock DID 525 chain. Ill look up what a rivit style and a master link style one looks like and get back to you.

i loosened up that nut thats inside the plastic covering on the right side to release the shock and height adjuster, but it kept spinning and now it wont tighten.. :-\ im afriad i might of striped the first few threads, not a big deal since i can alwyas just shave them off, i just need to figure out how to actually pull that bolt out. I cant seem to get the plastic cover off on the left side. it just seems stuck.

I welded an M10(?) stud onto the end of a rod, threaded the stud into the special fastener in the swingarm, an drifted it out.

How did you thread the stud into that fastener though? i guess i got it loose, i just need need to pull it out now, from some pics ive seen, there arent that many threads on it.

Atop of that, how did you remove that rubber/platic gromment on the left side of the bike? it will not budge at all, and ive soaked it in WD40 for the past hour as well. no go.

The rod onto which I welded the stud is about 12" long and protrudes from the right side of the swingarm so you can hit it with a rubber mallet.

The fastener that is loosened and removed from the right side of the bike is (if memory serves) an M10 socket head allen bolt.  The fastener on the left side must be pushed out -- the plastic plug is fused onto the fastener and will come out when you drift it.

Here ya go:


#12 has the female M10 threads inboard and the plastic cap on the outside -- its all one piece.  #11 is the bolt you loosened.

Ah I just need to fasten a long rod and fasten it to the #12 and drift it out. sounds easy enough wonder if i can get by with a steel rod and a hammer. not sure how tight #12 is  on there.

I assume part #10 can jsut be knocked out with a hammer? #6 looks like it holds it in place?

Be careful using steel rods as drifts, as you can damage the part you're trying to remove.

Yes, the swingarm pivot can also be drifted out (once you remove the circlip).  Take care not to damage the end.  I used a small piece of wood as a drift.

roger roger, got both circlips out, and will proceed with using a woodblock as a drift and find another way to drift  #12 out.


okay, i can see why you wouldnt use a piece of metal.... if you run a rod through it, you litteraly touch the platic cap on the other side. luckly, i had a rounded end on my rusty iron rod and it got it out easily. now i just need to punch out the #10 rod that goes through t the engine and break the chain, then im golden.

It looks like i have a rivet type chain, im gonna just grind off the rivets and source out new rivets!

Ok, dug this thread up.

I am up to the part where I am about to drift out the swingarm pivot. I CANNOT budge #6 on drawing 33. Does that even need to come out? I was trying to be careful not to strip it, I ended up turning my hex driver into a helix when i put a 4 foot long pipe on the end of my socket wrench...

Any tips? If i strip it, I'm probably screwed right?
