So I ordered the Tech-Spec Tank Pads for my 696.  I specifically asks for my model.  But Tech-Spec sent me the one for S2R/S4R.  Of course it doesn't fit.

A couple of email exchanges, and Nathan from Tech-Spec finally figured out that they do not offer pad for my bike.  So I have 2 options, return for refund or make a template and Tech-Spec will custom-cut a set of pads for me.  How cool is that?   applause  Of course I'm opting for the custom pads.  Now...  Here's the template I'm making.  Any suggestion?  It's covering the area where my knees press on the tank pretty well.  I just wanted to get some feed back before I sent this template back to Tech-Spec.

Looks good! Thanks for paving the way for the rest of us. How's the center strip going to look?

i'm pretty sure those are for the older-style monsters (i didn't know they had a pre-cut template now - i had to make my own)
...actually, i think i may have sent mine into them

maybe increase the gap between the seat and the grip a hair?

It looks like to me that it MIGHT be for an older Monster. Based on your pictures, it doesn't flow well with the tank plastics at the bottom portion and the edge that is near the center plastic. The general shape is there but it could be better.

kinda thought same, but thought could be just me since they assured me these ARE in fact desgined for new 696's.  Maybe they could just do a bit better then eh?
Otherwise, I am THRILLED with the product and customer service-top notch!

Intrestingly they looks pretty good on your bike.  Altho I really like the lines to lined up a bit better w/ the tank curves.  I confirmed w/ Tech-Spec.  Those are from the old monster.  They actually didn't realized that there's a difference until I showed them how the seat cut-out didn't line up the pads and the tank.  Here's how it supposed to fit on the old... ahem... 'classic' monster:

Here's the email I got from them:

Quote
I received a letter back from our production manager stating we don't offer any other kits that would be compatible with your bike.  If you'd like to make a template of the tank pattern we'd be happy to make you a custom set of pads.  When doing so, if you make just one side tank pattern, make sure it fits both sides of the tank.  If you make two different patterns for the left and the right sides, please mark them accordingly on the outside of the template.  Also, please indicate an arrow on the tank pads that points toward the front of the bike in order to give us a reference position relative to the bike.

ohhhh wow....so they inadvertently "lied to me"?   SURE not intentional, they HAVE been really great with me.....still, I specifically asked multiple times if these in fact are NOW for NEW 696...they even talked as tho they had been waiting for completion of NEW template for NEW Monsters....geesh.
Oh well, guess I will stick with these-did they say anything about center pad?  Mine DEF is not "right" and why we left it off...I WOULD prefer to have something there for protection...wonder if they can mail me one now after all I have been thru.
Lemme know if you come up with template for one they are making for you OR if they already have one to FIT?  TKS!

More development tonight.  I got a suggestion from Tech-Spec for how to modify the template.  I won't have time tonight to make / update the template, so will do that tomorrow night instead.

Hi Guys,

First I would like to say thanks a million for helping us out with the 696 pattern. Attached is a basic jpg. file with a couple of modifications that I would like to see for a TechSpec pattern. We can make the pattern any way you like it for your personal pattern, but if you could make these mods for TechSpec, it would be greatly appreciated.

First I would like to say your pattern is just about dead on for TechSpec. But, as opposed to one large arc on the bottom, could you cut two lines that better parallel the lines of the tank.  Good old masking tape or painters blue masking tape works well for creating these lines.

Thanks again for your help

Ok so, I made a new template with the suggested angle / straight cuts.  Didn't like it:

So I made the 3rd template that's almost identical to the first but w/ the rear part extended just a hair to catch the tank crest and continue the line down to the seat.

I think I like that the most now.  Going to send the last one to Tech-Spec tomorrow.

looking good! any consideration into making it more similar to old one, following the entire shape of that area of the tank?  and what about the center strip? long and thin?? please?  Grin not a fan of the clear or carbon ones offered by DP. also, are they making these once your done, or just as a one off? if not, wanna get a group buy going? i like where your heading with the design!

this has to be the fasted photoshop ive ever done so excuse the crappyness. just an idea, done poorly, but you get what i mean.

otherwise, keep on doin what your doin, i really wher its headed!

group buy!!!!

I sent both the version #2 (w/ the suggested straight cuts) and #3 (which is what I want) to them.  They will surely make pads from #3 template and may play around with #2.  I'm not sure what they would ended up as their production model.

Hopefully they will get mine in quickly.  Can't wait.
