Windows 7 has "xp mode", which is suppose to allow companies that had software specially made for them to operate on xp can operate on win7.  They did this to try to get businesses to convert to 7.  The only problem I heard of was that older computer mobos don't have a chipset that can handle xp mode.

i wouldn't really call it a "mode," it's more like running xp in a virtual machine. the chipset issue is that some don't support VT.

So far i have 1 machine running Vista and i don't see what all the fuss is about either good or bad. The rest are still on XP and until I broke it, i had one running 2000 Pro and it worked just fine. I guess if i get a new machine and it has a newer OS on it I'll go with it.

What I would really like though is to be able to run the software that I use regularly on MAC, but I don't see that day ever coming.

Vista is fine if you have the right specs and arent running really complex programs.

Ontop of that the 32bit version is also better then 64 bit if all you run are 32bit programs.

for vista, i find that a lot of my 32bit programs crash from time to time. (firefox will crash atleast 10 times in a day). While running MATLAB, the thing will be slower then one of the schools older machines since its 32bit, and will crash if i ask too much of it. same is true for Autocad.

isnt "XP mode" just a fancy way of saying compatibility mode? both vista and xp have had that from the beginning i believe.
If you drive the nicest car in the neighborhood, work in a cash business, and don't pay taxes, you're either a preacher or a drug dealer...

oh,.....and as long as we are on the subject.
a lot of US gvt. agencies just finalized the switch to XP professional in the last year or so......

kind of like the whole windows in windos thing? 32bit emulated in a 64 environment....vista emulated in a W7 environment?

I just made the switch from 2K Pro to XP.

I may go back.  ;)

why bother? just turn off all the xp eye-candy and you won't even be able to tell the difference.

without getting into the technical details of WoW and WoW64, yeah, kinda like that.

fyi, there is a difference between emulation and virtualization.

I have a very strong setup at my office and all of the systems that I manage are running Vista Business. Given that my setup is:

1. Intel Core 2 Quad 2.83GHz
2. 4GB Ram
3. 512Mb Nivida Graphics card

blah blah blah

I have little trouble with Vista Business. However, I'm running Win7 on my second computer and it does run more efficiently. Not that the average user would notice much difference, but given that my work is computer related I've already noticed some significant improvements over Vista. I think it was worded best when Win7 was quoted as being "Vista done right".

[thumbsup]

I used to swear by 2000, then XP Pro came along and won my vote. I still like 2000 and XP, but given the choice, I'd have to say that Win7 has my vote.

So for some reason pre '08 AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suit 2 and a few other programs will not run in Vista because of some compatibility issues...  Would they run in 7bullshit with the XP compatibility thing?
