Throttle stuck open!

had a major scary issue today.
The throttle of the bike stuck open. partially thank god. the revs kept sticking about 2500.
i checked all the usual suspects.
- fast idle.... closed
- throttle grip... going to closed
hmmm
pulled over. the cable was off the eccentric puller on the throttle body. and the eccentric was sticking open.
i was able to put the cable back on give it a few twist (engine off) and yep.. the return spring wasn't strong enough to overcome the sticking.
crap.
luckily i was about 1 mile from a shop i know. put the cable back on and decided to limp it to the shop , practically idling the way there.

we lubed the eccentric where the cable attaches and the spring, etc... nope. still sticking.. crap. there's a spring in between the intake plenums.
took the tank off, removed the battery and was able to stick the long WD40 stick down in there and lube the spring area....

problem solved!
instant response, no sticking, automatically back to idle. PHEW

SO, make sure you lube those throttle linkages, both the exterior one and the interior one.

That's crazy, hope you did wear your clutch out limping it back.

Is it possible you can post a pic of what you are talking about for this newbe?

Thanks

lucky... did you happen to do any rearrangement of your throttle grip lately. I had move my handlebar angle a while back and had prolems with the grip returning with a "snap".
Glad you got it figured out though.

nope throttle grip worked fine.

i didn't open the throttle enough on the way back to get it stuck open.

If you look at drawing 16 in the part catalog. there is a spring between the manifolds (it's not labeled). that is the one that got gummi and sticky. the eccentric is on the right looks like a half moon with a C on top. it also has a spring. i couldn't find the part number in the catalog for those parts. if someone could put that picture up for me it would help others.

Raux:

I just took off the airbox to adjust the valves and found the grease used on the throttle spring was dying out.  Used the DuPont Teflon spray lubricant I use on my chain and it cleaned the old grease out and slicked it up.  I think WD-40 will thicken with time, although not as much as whatever the bike had in there.

Stuck wide open?  Keep shifting!!!!

yeah i probably need to get in there with the chain lub i use as well. just needed it to stop sticking at the time.

Chain lube will gum up cables.  I used to use Tri-flon, but I don't think they make it any more.  I clean out cables with a cable luber and WD-40, then this silicone spray that I found in my garage.

make sure your housing isn't pinched somewhere... twisting the throttle open pulls cable, a spring pulls in back.  If you have a pinched line then you will be able to pull it more open but the friction could be high enough to prevent return.

Also check the return spring at the other end of the cable (engine side).

yeah. sorry. guess i wasn't clear.
the cable is fine. the spring on the engine side was the problem, but not the exterior one near the cable pull eccentric. the interior one between the two intakes was the sticking spring.
