If it is just as effective at 1/4 the cost, why not?  The more expensive helmets do not protect better.

They are quieter, look nicer, and have a desirable brand image.

analogy fail.

you are trying to say that "a more expensive helmet provides better protection"

Which is untrue, several independent magazine tests have shown this. The extra cost doesn't equate to extra protection, but you are paying for a lighterweight helmet, better venting, better aerodynamics, etc. Has nothing to do with the core function of the helmet: protecting your melon.

big bore kit on a bike is adding power to the bike. there's no analogy in adding protection to a helmet by paying more. (cover it in bubblewrap and I suppose its similar).

Similarly, you can't simply say "buy expensive tires and not use all of their stickiness" is like buying a more expensive helmet, again, its not a better protecting helmet - sure its lighter, looks better, and its better at cooling your noodle, but its not better at keeping your brain intact.

LIke I said,  $10 head, $10 helmet.  What do you see Indy car drivers wearing?

Unless you have no clue, you HAVE to know that they aren't paying for their own gear. You think they wear a Shoei because they want to? (Maybe they do, maybe they don't) But if they are sponsored by Shoei, you won't find them wearing a Arai helmet.

Where do you think those big companies get the money to sponsor race teams? From selling you an expensive helmet.

BTW, the $80 helmet that I was wearing when I got hit by a semi held up great. I never even got a headache despite the SERIOUS injury to my left leg.

They ride Ducati's as well.

Is there somewhere in this thread where someone says they don't?  ???

Alright, alright, you guys win.  I'm going to throw away my Arai's and Shoei's and use an old football helmet that is out in the garage.  Well, maybe not.

Have a good day.

Did you bother to read the article? Or are you so stuck on the thought that an expensive helmet is the best helmet that you just can't accept independent tests that say otherwise?

I think you're getting way too offended at this whole deal. No one is telling you not to buy an expensive lid.  They're just saying that SOME of the inexpensive ones work as well or better according to lab test results.  Not really an arguable thing at all.

I have one of those $600 race replicas, but not because I think I'm safer in it than in a $150 Bell.  I like the graphic, weight, airflow and aerodynamics of it and since I wear it almost every day I judged those things to be important enough to me to justify the extra $$$.  And I trust it to help out my melon in a fall.  Just not any more than other good helmets would.

So take a breath, and enjoy your Shoei/Arai/Soumy - just don't pretend you're safer in it than other brands.

Never mind, it doesn't really matter anyway.

Where was the name calling again? When you called NAKID 'numbnuts' just now?

You were making an argument that people had evidence against but you refused to acknowledge.

You took offense when someone called a bike a "Jap" bike when the bike was JAPANESE.

You're the one saying that the argument is that squids buy expensive helmets. WRONG. The argument is that an inexpensive helmet can be just as good as an expensive one.

Wow its getting rough in here. (avoids eye contact, hurries off to next thread)

you know what offends me?

somebody ranting and crying foul and labeling others as racists when they call a bike made by the Japanese a "Jap[anese] bike."

then, instead of realizing how silly this was, they continue to argue a moot point, they posit that only squids wear inexpensive helmets, despite studies showing that $ and protection are not synonymous when speaking of helmets, and that real riders where expensive helmets.

The superiority complex statement came after the "cheap chinese helmets are for squids" - not true, you don't have to belittle somebody's riding abilities based on a helmet choice that protects every bit as good (possibly better) than your expensive helmet. That was a conscious decision on their part to be protected the same as you, for less money. Money which could then be used for trackdays, or hookers, or beef jerky.

It's a no win situation, I've deleted everything I've written.  You guys win.

It's really not worth the aggravation, on either side.  Have a nice ride today.

Later.

No, first the comment JAP is a racial term, not Japanese motorcycle, but JAP.  Kind of like Chink.  Or Gook.  It's racial.

Nope.

Oh look at that! You're going through and deleting your posts!  [laugh]

Nice!!!! Well, you were quoted several times so at least there's still a little of what you said.
