I have pulled EVERY FRIGGIN' THING with my GTI, a 2001 VR6.  5'x8' U-Hauls packed to the TEATS, including a buncha stuff strapped to the roof, cross country, TWICE.  I've even pulled a 15' open trailer around the Hollywood Hills.  The hitch was a U-Haul install job and was not much more hidden than yours VW151.  Really the only problem I experienced was you had to drive mad slow entering and exiting driveways.  I scraped every time without fail.  Just remember your brakes aren't meant to be stopping a whole second car and you'll be golden.

Last week I installed a set of Koni FSD's shocks and struts on my 00 mk4 NB TDI. Went to Costco this weekend, came back ( Anchorage to Soldotna- 140 miles ) loaded to the gills. Upgrade at least your shocks. ;)
