Trailer hitch on VW GTI

I bit the bullet and put a hidden hitch on my GTI.  I'll let you all know what it's like when I go to pick my bike up from the show next week. 







I'll be pulling this.  I'll put up pictures of the whole set up soon.

I have a friend that does this already. It works, not great but good enough.

I have a friend that did that on his MkIV and he had no probs...until it came to driveways and such.  But on the otherhand if you've ever had a dropped car then you'll already know how to drive over them.

I've got a hitch on my mk4 tdi.  Pulls like a champ, stopping isn't so great when you get up near 1000lbs of pulled weight though.  Once towed about 1500 lbs a few miles for a friend and ended up running a stop light because there was no way I was going to be able to stop in time.  Thankfully there was very little other traffic at 430am, so I wasn't too worried.

( nice GTI btw. we did some mods to a customers, dynoed at 243HP and 280lbs/ft... turns the tires to smoke in 2nd.)

good to know.  The MKV GTI has bigger brakes by quite a bit than a MKIV TDI but it would still probably be interesting with 1500lbs.  I don't see every pulling more than 2 bikes and a trailer which would be about 1100lbs.  We'll see, it should be pretty interesting.

My father used to custom make hitches.  As long as there's a frame rail or frame hardpoint on the sides to attach it to, you can do it ~

Yeah... I was looking to get a Class I receiver for my Mk3 GTI VR6 so I could tow a light moto trailer... they make 'em for the Golf, but the ones I looked at specifically said non-GTI.    Apparently the butt end of a Mk3 GTI VR6 is different somehow?

I looked under the chrysler this morning and there is frame rail to hook up to on the passenger side, but on the driver side the Muffler pretty much is in the way of the frame. I would have to put a cherry bomb in there, or other wise re route the exhaust to a set of Termis or something...

I think the exhaust is your main obstacle on most cars.  Your MK3 GTI likely has the same frame as a regular rabbit/golf of the era but I could see it having a different exhaust.  no less it may still work.  On the chrysler I dunno,  sounds like a good excuse to have a custom muffler shop sort out some sort of mid mount exhaust on it.
