Does a 2005 M1000s have a metal or plastic tank?

I think it's a metal tank. The first tanks in 2005 to be plastic were the S2R800's...
2005 S2R800
2006 S2R1000
2015 Monster 821

2004 Honda VFR

If i had to put money on it, id say its metal. it wasnt until 06 when plastic took over everything.

if you have the bike on hand, youll know when you touch it.

Not 100% sure on the 1000 - but I know from the 05 620s the answer was both/either.  They started converting the 620s to plastics part way through the 05 production run.  Helps you question I'm sure.

But that being said - I'd lay odds that it'll be metal.
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

Thanks guys.  I'm looking at a M1000S this weekend and was just curious.  I have been happy with the plastic tank on my 2006 620, but I am worried about a plastic tank falling about over time.

If there is a seam/pinchweld on the bottom edge it's steel. If it's smooth it's plastic.

Also if the pump is mounted in the bottom, and there is no cap ring or holder, it's plastic.

That makes sense because some of the 2005 620's had 4-piston goldline brakes while others had the newer/cheaper 2 piston brakes found on the 2006 620 and the 695.  The 620's with the 4-piston brakes probably are the same ones that have the metal tanks.

I looked at some Monster pictures saved on my computer and I can see the seam/pinchweld on the bottom edge of the steel tanks.  I can also see my 2006 didn't have a seam.  It looks better without the seam, but it isn't really noticable especially if painted black.  Thanks for the help.

They plastic tank MIGHT give you warping issues, but the metal ones can leak at the hinge.

I hadn't heard about that one before.  One problem with being a member of this forums is that I end up knowing all of the potential problems so I have more to worry about.

I had an 05 s2r 800 and it was plastic tank.  But my 05 s4r has a metal tank

Leaky hinges are easy to fix.  ;)

Agreed. My tank warped, but didnt bother me enough to purchase a new one. But it did bother me enough to have Duc replace it for free. But yeah, give me a leaky hinge any day rather than this plastic crap
