I don't think there is a law that says they have to accept cards.

Why wouldn't they be able to set a min purchase/

I think if I remember correctly it may have something to do with the contract between the credit card issuing company/bank and the merchant.  I don't believe their contract allows them to issue a minimum purchase threshold.

I hope people that are knowledgeable on this topic can chime in and clarify.

business do not have to accept credit cards. however, if they do, they are not supposed to set minimum purchase amounts. that is in the agreements between the merchant and the card issuer. the merchant can lose their ability to accept visa/mc/etc....

that doesnt stop some from doing so anyway. what i have noticed though, is that if you are using pay at the pump, they cant or wont enforce this. this leads me to believe that there is no reason for them to make that claim other than to increase their profit.

in fact, my bet is that they cant enforce this. so pay for 5 dollars worth of gas inside, and when they say they have a minimum charge.....tell them to piss off. offer to pay the charge with a card, or not pay it.

i bet they charge your card for 5 bucks.

Note that there is an 800 number I can call, that I now have programmed into my phone that works 24/7 and puts me into contact with a human that can unlock a card that the automated system thinks has been stolen.

Also note that this number was NOT on the back of my card.

I raised hell with the bank and someone got a talking to.

As I understand it, the biggest reason for the "minimum charge" is to offset the flat fee or percentage that the credit card companies charge to use their services.

Minimum charges are not an issue for debit card users who pay at the pump. The company simply passes the charge on to you. Around here, Circle K charges debit card users who pay at the pump $1. That's one of the reasons I don't fill up there anymore.

some airlines now require cash for in-flight food or beverage purchases.
Last time I bought a beer on a flight (about 1 year ago) the only thing they would take was CC.  No cash.  Can't remember which airline though.
