Riding through downtown Austin when I downshift to stop at light and I hear Cruuuhh!!!

WTF?!?

Bike doesn't go.  Look down and notice chain came off!

I pull off onto sidwalk. 2 guys that were oogling over the Duc sound came over to c if I needed help. One happened to b a bike mechanic and has a TL 1K. Got chain back on. Rode home. Bought new rear tire for it a while back. Have to install that this week and will get chain tightened at same time.

That could have been a major shitstorm if the chain came off a few minutes earlier on the highway! :/

Wow, lucky it happened at slow speed - not tight enough?

252,000 km/seventeen years - loving it

loose enough for it to fall of obviously.   ;D

I'd give your bike a THOROUGH once-over.  Check your cases for any cracks, slivers or leaks.  Check the swingarm, wheels, axle, sprockets, etc.

Wait a sec.  Chain came off, but didn't break?!?  Either your sprockets are toasted, your alignment is completely screwed or you haven't been checking your chain tension.

No it probably broke but he fixed it by pulling a couple of spare nails out of his tire and used them to hold the master link together.

Something ain't right here. With any maintainence the chain shouldn't "come off". Last time I saw a chain loose enough to come off, the sprockets were so fragged that they were binding the chain.

Bad news take it in if you don't know how to check this stuff... is this a dual sided swingarm bike?

Cut the man some slack!

I think he just needs to adjust his derailleur!

You're lucky you did not have to tow your bike.

I had that happen to me back in 2006 as I was on a turn in an exit ramp late at night. I hear this noise and notice bike is not really picking speed.  I  was able to pull over.  I threw my jacket and helmet on the ground.  It turned out many cars that were passing me thought that there was an accident and were reporting car/bike , bike / bike and bike passenger hurt reports to the police  (helmet rolled on the side of the street looked like an accident I suppose). I hear sirens passing nearby and was wondering what was going on.  Finally a state trooper finds me tells me that they were looking for me all this time it turns out.   I explain to him that it was just a chain came off the back sprocket.  Anyhow, I had to tow the bike home and of course the tow guy had to pry the chain loose from the sprocket in order to roll the bike on to the bed.  In the process, scratched the swing arm.

(good reason to install case savers.  Last season my mechanic was trying to track down a consistent small leak and after so many many tries tracked the cause to  a problem that could have probably easily been solved had I installed case saver.  Mechanic sealed/epoxy or whatever that area and asked me if I ever had a chain problem.  Behold I did....  I finally just bought a case saver and will install it)

If it was loose enough to come off I think the chain and sprockets are likely wasted. Case saver is a good idea, too. About $20 from Ca. Cycleworks, cheap insurance.

POW!
What a spunky bunch we have!

Seriously, that isn't normal.  Did the guy that put your chain back on say anything?  Was he not surprised that it happened?  Nevertheless, might be worth a once over by a Ducati tech.

Thanks Dana!   [laugh]  Yes, tough crowd.  I know some here are socially retarded though and have difficulty expressing themselves in writing.  [cheeky]  I accept all feedback though. That's what I'm here for..learn more about my bike.  I'm no mechanic by any means.  I've been learning over the years though and try to do as much as I can with the tools I have.  The bike does need to go in.  It just rolled 66K on Tuesday.  The chain was loose.  I said that in the first post.  I hit a 6" pothole though when this happened.  I'm sure that didn't help.  She just needs to last me a few more weeks though!!

I try to shop for them, but the store closed this time

It used to be so nice, it used to be so good
