the suspension on my 99 m750 is horrible. worse than my sv650 when i bought it. i switched out the rear shock on my sv for a used (cheap$) kawasaki zx10 rear shock, and had the forks rebuilt.  that totally changed my bike. my question is, does anyone know what the cheapest way to get my suspension problems under controll? possibly what rear shocks from other bikes will fit?

I have an ohlins shock that is purpose made for your bike. I had it on my M900ie for only a few hundred miles. Ohlins DU440 with remote reservoir, shock fit all Monster 600/ 750/ 900 1994-01. ie Dual sided swing arm with hoop type ride height adjuster. This is the best way to upgrade the suspension as when i was looking there were VERY few options.

well it shouldnt be horrible so its either knakered or you are too heavy for it. Grin
If its knakered then get a new rear shock   Theres lots of folks on here had their suspension set up for their weight.
Cos without being too cheeky about it the average American monster owner weigh about twice the average italian one does.

How do you know when rear shock is going bad?  My license plate was rubbing against the back tire and had to bend it opposite way to stop that. But what kind of bounce do you experience on a bad shock? 

[Dannog]  How much do those Ohlins shock cost ?

If your tail is chopped the plate has to be angled out so it will not hit.  As far as the OEM shock goes, it ain't as bad as people think unless it is "knackered" or not sprung for you.  If you weigh over 160 lbs with gear and you have the stock spring you are under sprung, but if you are not too much over, a preload adjustment may be enough.  Either way, a linear spring instead of the factory progressive spring will be an improvement. If the shock is leaking, the chrome on the shaft is worn, or the bike continues to bounce more than once after the shock is compressed it is "knackered".  If the shock has more than 24K miles on it it is probably well on it's way to "knackered"

Any rebuild with proper valving and spring type will be a big improvement without "too" much cost, but if you want the best for the least, steal a bike with Ohlins on it.
