Author Topic: Shop Says I need a PCIII, whats your thoughts?  (Read 2877 times)

I added the Akrapovic exhaust, flashed ECU and K&N filter, dropped the bike off for TPS reset. Shop called and said that the bike wasn't performing "right" on accel, and they think it's running lean, and they are suggesting a PowerCommanderIII for the cure. Should I buy it and have them install and tune? Or are they trying to soak me? Or?

I just don't want to ruin the motor running lean.

where'd you get the ECU flashed?

fatduc would be a cheaper option over PCIII, since your bike is closed loop...

Have you removed the O2 sensor/input in this install? When you say "flashed" ecu, I assume a DP or OE reflashed by mash? If the O2 is not taken out of the loop, then A PCIII isn't gonna help ya as it will be "fighting" with the O2 over control of the mixture... and the above statemet for a fatduc might be in order.

If the O2 is gone, I gotta say that a PCIII is defintely the way to go for max power and rideability, reliability etc. I have a full termi system w/ a DP ecu and still added the PCIII cuz it wasn't just right. I got 8hp and 10f lbs of torque w/ a flat 13.1 A/F ratio across the board from mine...  waytogo

I *think* I have read that the DP ecu does not need an o2 sensor - but if there is one connected it will use it.  As above - if the o2 is still installed, and you are going to keep it that way, a fatduc would richen the mixture.  If you are thinking about removing the o2 sensor then give it a go and see how it runs before doing anything else.  If you leave the o2 sensor on then there has been lots of discussion about how the PCIII doesn't work right with the o2 sensor.
edit - if you remove the o2 sensor and you get an engine light then the flash is not right.  A DP ecu will not light up the check engine light when the o2 sensor is removed.

IIRC, he poked around here for Answers and ended up buying it of a guy on ebay, so if it runs like crap, id point my finger at the ECU. Maybe you got an S4R map and not an S4RS map.

If that is the case, not being sure of the map, the only way I'd go is pull the o2 sensor and do the PCIII

 The ecu has the map it is supposed to have (DP 96511703B, no immobilizer).

The "flashed" ECU was purchased through Ducati Depot.

Calling the shop as I type getting more details, cell phone was crapping out when I had the first call from the shop.

with the changes you made you do need more fuel. there are options other than PCIII.

check the closed loop ECU thread.

reread the thread, he has the DP ECU to compensate for the stuff he got.

another thing might be of interest, did he give you the ecu for full kit? or just the slip on. This is why i recommended you go to our in house guy Monstermash, instead you just poked around here for answers to your questions and bought it of ebay and complain it isn't working right.

The DP computer will not recognize an 02 sensor.
That is good to know.  My DP is number 96517706B (full system) so apples and oranges I guess.  The '03" might be for the slip-on exhaust?

OK I will read the on the Web some more, I remember looking at the DP#'s and thought it was right, I could be wrong, probably the case.

Two options basically:

toss the 02-lambda sensor -- it isn't being used with the DP ECU anyways

1) Buy / install a PCIII and dyno and create the proper fuel map.  Leave as is then.

2) Do #1 (but borrow the PCIII) and then forward your ECU and the PCIII fuel map to whomever can reflash your ECU (Depot?), etc.  Install the corrected DP ECU reflashed setup.  Return the PCIII from whom you borrowed it.

Basic DP ECU fuel map is still on the lean side for some (most?) aftermarket exhaust systems.

Thats assuming the ebay seller who sold him the map is willing to custom reflash it based on the added PCIII Fuel points (im not sure if their addition of fuel is a 1:1 in the Ducati Performacne ECU's standards).

At this point, i would make sure you bought the right ECU. and if it isnt the right ECU, try and return it and get the right one. Or if you can return it completely, buy it from monstermash, throw it on the dyno, and send it to him for a reasonably better custom flash.

 If you can't then consider the ECU as a very expensive way to take full advantage of a PCIII. But thats the most expensive way.

Yes, Ducati Depot is going to send me a new ecu. Not for certain, but he thinks he sent me an ECU for a desmo engine and not a Testa. Tom, the guy at Ducati Depot is trying to make things right, he is going to pay for the second TPS reset. So with the right ECU, there was a comment earlier about possibly needing a PCIII still for more fuel, or could I pay MASH's fee to do a hybrid map on the ECU and achieve as good/or better results(and support a member)?

Trying to save $100 dollars(due to a 2yr old, an 8mo and one on the way), has costed me ride time. In the Pacific Northwest our riding season is allready short with winter snowfall.
