it's on a bunch of macforums. I have a macbook 1.83ghz that started overheating when I ran the last upgrade. Resetting the ECU fixed it.

I think you're right. I'm looking at getting an iMac next time. I don't port this portable all that much.

I'm in the same boat.  Tired of instability and windows always trying to think for me - Most of the time I want to tell MS that some kind of help is not the kind of help that helping is all about.

I work from home and need a fair amount of computing power and have statistical apps that don't like Mac....

So... What's up? What's the prob besides everything?  :P

My computer just told me "make the beast with two backs you!" too and goes black about 30 secs after start-up now. Brand new error this morning.  [bang] Odd thing is that if I try to shut down right after it starts up it'll shut down just fine and the screen won't go black even though it takes more than 30 sec to shut down. *shrug* Gonna get help from my dad when he gets home.

Did you try a chdsk. My comp would just keep restarting and never boot up. Pulled the drive, stuck it into a usb enclosure, attached to my lap top and ran a chkdsk. A few hours later it was better than ever and I saved all my info.

SAS.  I do a lot of processors heavy stat analysis with huge data sets (hundreds of columns, hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions, of rows)

I really need to pick out a new desktop and would love some advice......

the newest version of leopard is causing problems with some older duocore intel machines. Apparently it buggered up the heat management on those machines.

Bump up the ram.  I have an intel core 2 duo MacBook Pro thats three years aold and it runs like a top. I maxed the ram out at 4 gigs, made a huge differnce. Do an erase and reinstall the OS (put all your stuff on an external of course) as well.  Tiddies every thing up and brings all the information to the front of the drive.

My license covers a lot of products.  I mostly use the base, STAT, IML, QC, ODS, and GRAPH probably in that order.  Mostly STAT by a long shot.

Are you familiar with SAS?

not specifically.

it looks like everything except for GRAPH is supported on 64-bit windows and 64-bit redhat linux 4 and 5.

GRAPH's system requirements are much different (only windows/redhat 64-bit support is on itanium).

i'd probably start looking at a hp z-series workstation or a dell precision t7400-series workstation.

are you wanting to stick with windows?

how important is GRAPH, because it'll likely preclude you from adopting a 64-bit platform.

Awesome!  I've used GRAPH like once years ago.  ODS has really made GRAPH obsolete.  ODS is still a bit cludgey though - my version hates new versions of FLASH.......

in what way is what counts.

maxing ram is useless if you have a 32bit system. you can only use 2gig at any given momment. total, not per slot.
