I'm thinking about something new when I get back but I haven't decided on what yet.  I was thinking higher-end 1911 but then I was thinking maybe a Sig 556 or something similar.

Hold off on the 556 for now.  Sig has some rather nice piston driven M4 type items coming out shortly, and they are looking to be VERY competitively priced.

If you get a nice 1911, really do your shopping. Things to note: Kimber's Custom Line is not custom. Its the name of the manufacturing line. Its not a custom like an Ed Brown, or  Nighthawk, or an STI, or a Wilson. Its the difference between a 1098S and a 1098R. They both cost more, but one got a lot more attention at the factory.

That being said, I really like my Kimber. But I had to correct its shortcomings. Shitty MIM ambi safety was one. Plastic MSH was another.

They all have a plastic msh. MAYBE not on the steel frame kimbers.

Mine is a CDP-II Pro. (4" Barrel for ccw). I'm a fan of the slim VZ grips I have that don't chew up my undershirts, and I have an aluminum checkered msh from VZ as well.

The ambi safety broke in the first few weeks I had the gun. The connection is not well thought out, and its an MIM part. The more robust ambi safeties might work fine, but not the originally equipped version from Kimber. I have no use for an ambi safety, it was just a plus-feature on that model, so I replaced it with an Ed Brown, and it works great and feels much better than the original.

I see.  My Kimber is a steel framed model and I had never noticed it having plastic anything.  Guess you're right, and the alloy framed models have plastic MSH.  Interesting.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Nighthawk is at the top of the list right now, mainly because a local shop is a dealer.  Wilson might be a tad bit high for me.  Even their cheapest model is right at the top of my range.

Yeah, I just don't know if I want another AR.  The Sig 516 did look pretty sweet, though.  But I like the 556.  Another choice is a DSA FAL.  Always wanted one but could never find one in my price range.  Well, now, my price range has gone up so that might be the way to go.

Man, I might have to see about going to the range this weekend.  I'm getting really jealous looking at everyone's stuff.

Ha, no, but its not tool steel either - another MIM part. I understand the cost efficiency of casting, but for the love of god, don't put the words "Custom Shop" on the side then.

enough of that anti-kimber rant, because the gun functions fantastically right now and is very accurate. I'm looking to try out one of these small STI 9mm 1911's in the near future, with the revolver-like permanent sights to see how it does. And its made nearish to Dallas (though Nighthawk and Wilson aren't that far away in Arkansas I suppose. All much closer than the Northeast manufacturers)
