On the topic of guns. And safes...

Anybody recommend a good, reasonable dehumidifier system? Are the plug in wand things really worthwhile? I'm not having any issues, but I'd like to 'insure' my 'collection'.

I've never heard of such a safe, but sounds cool.

Got a link to an example?

There's several available at cabelas, cheaperthandirt, midwayUSA, etc. Its a rod that you plug in, it warms and pulls moisture out of the air, supposedly thereby lessening the chances of rusting.

Right now I just throw some dessicant in there.

Like a reverse humidor?

;D

Yes. I just need to pull the moisture off the guns and put them on the cigars.

How are they less accurate? You lost me there. The AR piston system isn't really rigid like the AK. Clearly the most accurate would be no gas system at all so that the barrel was completely untouched.

the AR piston systems are all short stroke design, most similar to the SKS.

I don't think accuracy is different by much, except that with a piston system you can limit the amount of parasitic gas loss (piston stops it) whereas the direct impingement system flows gas until the bolt returns.   you could theoretically have more projectile velocity due to more available pressure.

plus, a hell of a lot cleaner.  if designed correctly, only the piston face gets dirty, not the whole bolt carrier/chamber/bolt.

i use one.  they work, but you have to have a mostly airtight setup.  quite frankly, the BEST setup you can use is a 60w lightbulb.  yup.  it works, try it.  but again -- mostly airtight.

we have an Aprilaire in the house keepign it right at about 45% humidity, but my gun safe (which is a built-in concrete block+steel door closet) runs about 15%

+1 on the 60w bulb idea; I did that with camera & electronic equipment in a closet/wardrobe in southern China (a little north of the China/Vietnam border) for six months through the rainy season, and everything that was stored that way came through in great shape.

I use Goldenrod plug in dehumidifiers in my safes but I also put some stick on foam weather stripping on the doors to help seal them up. Seems to be working well. [thumbsup] ATO and I are both in the same city so we deal with the same humidity factor. Jeez, I've had my Goldenrods so long do they even still make them???

Heavier, sure (but marginally). Unnecessary compared to direct gas impingement? Sure. But I adorned the lower with all sorts of crap you don't "need".

The only gun I really bother keeping immaculate clean is the 1911. It had to go back to Kimber and was finicky at first.  Since I had to "work" to get it perfect, I like to 'hold up my end of the bargain' (I should clarify, however, it is no safe queen. Its actually never been in the safe).

pistons cause vibration. It's one of the reasons why the ARs now clean house at the national matches.

In other news, I have had a sweet home-built AR-Lower for awhile now, waiting on funds and decisions about an upper (piston). It was "advanced legos" to any who have not decided they want to attempt this. Really not hard at all. Can get expensive though, depending on the parts. Parts:

Sun Devil MFG Lower
Alexander Arms Trigger Kit
KNS Anti-Rotational Pins
KNS Takedown Pins
DPMS or RRA little bitty parts (roll pins, etc)
Winter style trigger guard
Wilson Bolt Release
Oversized Mag Release
Magpul Grip, VLTOR stock

Looking good so far.  One of the shops down here is offering silly deals on LWRC uppers, so if you decide to take a trip to Hawaii.  ;)  I am looking at getting a 6.8 with 12.5" barrel myself.

A friend of my just bought a LMT (Lewis Machine and Tool) M4 that is piston driven.

This is the same firearm Delta Carries, however, minus select fire and probably some other shit.

Fixed, but not really accurate.  The guys you mention get to carry whatever tool fits the particular job at hand.  Having said that, their tool kit generally has bits from KAC, HK and now FNH more so than LMT.

I got a Bushmaster lower for my bday last year and ended up building it up with an RRA 16" upper in 6.8.  Bushie lower, RRA upper, DPMS internals, Timney trigger, Magpul UBR stock, Hogue rubber grip.  I need to do something with the forend though.  Just not sure what.  No pics of it right now cuz I'm a few thousand miles away from home.

I'm thinking about something new when I get back but I haven't decided on what yet.  I was thinking higher-end 1911 but then I was thinking maybe a Sig 556 or something similar.
