dumb question on rpm

What rpm is safe to use for:

a) freeway riding
b) traffic riding

At 5,000rpm the bike feels great. Am i able to sit on 5,000 - 5,5000 on the freeway without doing any harm to the engine?

Absatively.

On your tacho (Rev counter) you'll see where the graduations and numbers turn red. Its not advisable to go into that section unless you want to turn your engine into a bucket of generally unusable bits of metal.

Your engine will have its sweet spot where everything is working together and cooperating nicely. It'll feel really nice and smooth.

It usually coincides with unfortunately, "points loss" and financial contributions to the States coffers.

b) traffic riding - Totally depends on your circumstances, usually never see more than 4th gear but then I don't do much city stuff

yeah, 6th gear gets grumpy below 4000rpm with mine (992)....maybe even 4200

city, 1st and 2nd and always up around 4 to 5 even as high as 7 or 8 when she needs a burst. she has to be in the sweet spot ready for when I need to move...sometimes you need to break to be safe, othertime you need to go!

(anytime I see someone on the mobile I'm gone! put at least one vehicle between me and them!)

When I first read this I thought it was about the channel 10 motorsport show.

It won't do any harm. I agree with Spider. My bike runs better over 4,000rpm.

I went from Hobart to SA last year to do the Turismo. I kept the 14t sprocket on and most of the way wish I'd changed back to the 15 before leaving. It would have been more comfortable with the revs a bit lower but did it no harm. Prob sat on 5000 to 5500 rpm most of the way there and back.

Cheers Guys, i just wasn't sure if these Duc's blew up if riding at that sort of rpm LOL.

I think i am still brainwashed from the old Duc's that blew up if you looked at them 

I normally rode around 4000rpm in traffic but i must say today to work/home riding around 5000rpm life was so much better. Bike felt very smooth, power was always there and i actually feel 'better'. Not sure how that last part works but it was a pleasure to ride today  [moto]

at the start I kept having her round the 3.5 to 4k range...i think a lot iof it was purely the noise....it sounded like it was going hard! but then I got used to her and ride her above 4000 now, the slightest lag in acceleration means you're not in the sweet spot.....and 3200 rpm there is a slight lag.

I am going down to the farm this weekend and see if she is a 14 tooth however.

My last bike before the monster was a 250cc Soozooki Across. Wouldn't go anywhere without at least 7,000rpm on the tacho and doing 120km/h in top gear had it sitting on 13,000rpm.

I wasn't so worried about it blowing up as it was a slap together bike anyway but it took me a while riding it to get comfortable revving it that high.
