Dash is fried, need new one. Can a used one be programmed t work?

So, I was posting about electrical gremlins on my 2003 M620 I was dealing with last week. Found out from the Dealer that my dash is fried (literally, found a burn mark on the back of the circuit board.) A New one is $895. If I can find a new one, can it be set  up to work with my bike?

Any model considerations to think about?

the instrument cluster is part of the whole immobilizer thing....
in the past, this would mean new cluster, new ecu, new ignition+keys.
the reason for this is that each ecu/immobilizer/dash are mated to each other, and cant be swapped.

however, since folks have started to be able to reflash the ECU, this may no longer be the case. check with monstermash over in the minor sponsors board to see if this is something that he can help with, and good luck.

Does anyone have any experience dealing with getting a new dash? By the time I add labor to the almost $900 part, this is going to cost me over a grand. It seems even if I get a used dash, the reflashing and shipping and labor will get me up in cost too.

So the board in my Dash fried itself, and I'm unfortunately looking into a very expensive, unplanned mod. Dealer wants almost $900 for a new dash. My question is, does it matter what late model dash I get? My bike is a 2003 M620. Will any from the last 5 years work for me?

Now, if I can even FIND a used dash, how much hassle is it to get it working with my bike?

You mean reprogram a used Dash or install a new one. Either way I'd love to find out how.

i mean installing he new dash.

1) use an allen wrench to loosen the bolts
2) disconnect the wiring harness
3) remove fried instrument cluster
4) lift tank
5) disconnect old ECU (right above the fuse box)
6-10: reverse order with new parts

Sp, my understanding from the dealer is that I only need a new dash, NOT he (more expensice ) ecu. Does anyone know what's involved with installing the new dash and getting it communicating?

Installing the dash is easy, but getting it to communicate probably needs to go to ducati. How about you take it to an electronic/tv repair shop. Have them replace the fried components. Diodes, resistors, transistors.. they can be replaced. See if it fires up when done.. if not, relearn with the red key. If still no go, THEN have ducati do the job. 900$ is worth seeing if it can be repaired

You can install a used dash if you get your ecu reflashed to eliminate the immobilizer. Talk to Monstermash on this forum, or contact ducatidepot.com for a reflashed ecu from them. They will send you the new ecu with ducati performance map installed, and the immobilizer removed for $450. Then, you can use whatever gauge you want.

you can get a reflashed ECU And a used gauge cluster for half the cost of a new factory gauge cluster from the dealer. the reason the dealer gauge cluster will work right out of the box is because it is a virgin cluster that is, un-mated to an ecu. the reflash is about $450 and another gauge cluster is about $100. if you search on this forum, you will see several how-tos on removing the cluster and replacing the ecu.

I have a cluster from a 05 - S2r for sale. Not sure if it is the same or not. Only problem is the lens has a crack in it.

Thanks everyone for he feedback. So my question now is, if I buy a new dash ... Keep my old (supposedly healthy) ecu, can I just plug in the dash? Or is there a set up to it? DOes anyone know what that set up is like?

You want to make sure you know what caused your dash to fry.  I'd hate to plug in a new $900 part and have it fry too because the problem was in the wiring harness somewhere.

There is a mating procedure in the shop manual - it might be right.  I've read that the process is either optional - if you don't care about the immobilizer function or possibly automatic.  The most important thing is the first key you insert - it will become your "red" key.  If you are talking about a $900 part, it might be a good idea to have an authorized shop do the work.
