From: http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/577/4023/Motorcycle-Article/Ducati-Mega-Monster-Rumored.aspx

MCUSA already sampled the 2009 Ducati Monster 1100 riding through the hills of France at the world-wide press launch. It will be an ugly day in the office fighting over the "Mega Monster" invite...Ducati are close to unveiling a ‘Mega Monster’ to compete in the lucrative performance cruiser market according to factory insiders. As far as can be ascertained, the bike will use the existing 1198cc from the Superbike range, which will be fitted into a part-trellis, part casting type frame. It is expected the bike will sit long and low, but still use quality performance parts like Brembo brakes and Ohlin’s suspension.

Not a lot else is known, but the bike does appear to make sense for the Bologna concern, who are gradually noticing a decline in the Sportbike market as riders get older and are less able to, or want, to ride them. Due to their premium pricetag, the high-end Ducati sportbikes are often out of the grasp of younger rides purses, hence the decline in sales.

The same source suggests the BMW GS rival we have mentioned here before will definitely be at the Milan show in November, possibly alongside this new Mega Monster.

Another couple of bikes still seem to be in the wind, like the new Scrambler and a new Hypermotard. As both came from the Terblanche designer pen, some suggest that neither will happen at all as the factory wish to enter a new design era and distance themselves from the immediate past!

Let's hope we can safely call BS on this one. Tongue

What really doesn't make sense is this:

Not a lot else is known, but the bike does appear to make sense for the Bologna concern, who are gradually noticing a decline in the Sportbike market as riders get older and are less able to, or want, to ride them. Due to their premium pricetag, the high-end Ducati sportbikes are often out of the grasp of younger rides purses, hence the decline in sales.

If I recall correctly, with the introduction of the 1098/848/1198, ducati sales skyrocketed.

but isn't part of it because the new SBK was designed to meet a price point? they wanted it better, and cheaper, to be more competitive in the market

Who cares? They're not putting a gun to your head and making you buy one  Smiley

And let's face it - plenty of people buy Ducatis for the name on the tank and the sound ... I don't really mind models like this from a business standpoint, more profit for the factory = good for the business.

Cheers,
