I can't really picture that shock placement as being optimal for a dualsport. Then Again, I can't picture a 1098 engine being optimal for a dualsport either 

Just like the Multi it'll be "dualsport" only in name.  Hard packed gravel maybe with the DTC at max.

Hmm. Maybe I'm missing something, but that lucks about as ugly as the Multi to me - in fact, uglier. Guess when the time comes, I'll just have to look for an ST (or get BST's for the sbk and pocket the extra cash  )

Looks like the streetfighter with a big fairing and taller bars. Problem is, if it has the 1098 motor, it may price out of reach for most of us.

I think there will be 2 versions (at least).  A water cooled 4 valve (1098), and a 1100 air cooled 2 valve (monster).

Yes it needs the 1098 motor! and no, the air cooled multi is dead (for now). It is extremely unlikely that the DS motor would fit in the same frame as a 1098 motor (see monster / streetfighter).

So here's an interview Diego Sgorbati, Ducati vice president of marketing in an italian mag.

"The 'road enduro' of which many spy photos exist will be there[EICMA]...however, we don't think of it as an 'road enduro' like the mags describe it," says Diego Sgorbati, Ducati vice president of marketing in an interview with an Italian magazine. That's the first official quote related to the Ducati Strada Aperta a new adventure touring model that's expected to be in the same vein as the Yamaha TDM, new Triumph Tiger and KTM 990 SMT.

"Ducati is looking at many segments, scooters, custom, enduro, off-road...it's a normal expansion," says Sgorbati. "Before going down one road though we look at all the potential barriers, technological and distribution related. For example, how many of our dealers can sell a superbike, as well as a motocross bike? Also, does it match the 'soul' of the brand, does it make sense? What worked 20 years ago might not make sense today. [The Ducati Vyper cruiser] in any kind of near future, yes, it's out. Maybe in 4-5 years we would look at the custom market to as well as other segments to see where we could expand."

It's expected that the Strada Aperta will use a version of Ducati's water-cooled V-Twin although its not known if that will be the Ducati Streetfighter's 1099cc engine or the newer 1198.4cc motor. That engine and the street-focused running gear evident in the pictures above and in other Strada Aperta spy shots indicates that while the bike might be tall like a giant trailie, it's focus will resolutely be on-road performance, hence the name, which translates to "Open Road."

they need  more models around the 10k range. 15k is too high

That was their business plan announced a few years ago...limit the entry level bikes and focus more on higher end models which bring higher profit per unit sold.

I agree...a model around 11K would be great. I think they could do it with the 1098 motor though. There isn't any reason a model with an 848 motor would automatically be cheaper. I'll bet it costs the same to build an 848 engine as it does a 1098 engine. The cost savings come with things like no traction control, cheaper suspension, cheaper rims, lack of a stock steering damper, etc.
