Did a search and someone said it is possible to get the belts off without removing the pulley. any word on that? Mine seem to be IMPOSSIBLE to get out without removing the pulley.

I tried looking at the tutorial for making such a tool, it doenst look like it would cut it for my bike, especially being ridden in crud everyday there extra torque on everything. Anyone have a link to a cheap pulley tool?

no first hand,........but aren't you going to want to do the tension after putting on new belts (assuming that is what you are doing?) and if so, why not remove them?

I'm talking about the main drive pully. the one that moves both belts just above the clutch.

i have to get the original belts off first.

Triple J

Can't you just loosen the tensioners and slide them off?

He Man

ive been trying to. theres not enough space between the main drive pulley and the engine casing. they went with a larger diameter pulley (20teeth vs 18 teeth) and ended up taking up that space. id need to fork over some money to buy a tool if i can find it. but the only one that carries it is ca-cyclewokrs and its a $150 tool!

Why did you go with a larger crank pully?

You mean why did ducati go with the larger crank? thats just how it comes. i just took a look at my workshop manual says i need to remove the pulley to get the belts off. :( anyone have such a tool?

edit: i just realize something, is the timing dot on the horizontal cylinder pully supposed to be marked aroudn the 5 oclock position? or are we suppose to use the hole thats almst 12 oclock? cause i put the bike with horitizonal TDC with the 5 oclock dot on the cam pully....

I understand *exactly* what you are experiencing.  There was enough clearance to remove/install the belts on my S2R1K, but my buddies MTS did not have enough clearance.  We got the old belt out, but there was no way to install the new one without risk of damaging it.   We've been speculating that its just a manufacturing tolerance thing, some have enough clearance, some don't.  According to my buddy, this seems to be more prevalent on the MTS.  He ended up sanding down the surface of the case, so there was enough clearance between the case and the pulley to slip the belt through.  Didn't need to remove much material.

how about the timing situation? what timing mark did you use to put it all back together?

right now with the foward cylinder at TDC i have the cam at the 5 oclock position theres a clear white dot there. but for all other 2vs its the 2 oclock hole in the case.

the cam doesnt want to really stay in that position and given the longer belts and larger pullys i figure it would of changed. i installed it and the bikecycles fine, so i tired it on and ti runs. i havent taken it out for a ride yet though....

I can't help you with the timing marks, since I can't see what you're looking at and its been many months since I've worked on a DS1000, so I can't remember where the marks are located.

no worries, i kept on having a parallax view of my DS1000 and the online videos. theres no hole in that part of the case, theres only 1 timing mark...

now i just need to figure out how to get that belt out. lol

alright im pretty confused....

S2R1000 workshop manual says i need TWO Tools to get the belts off. one to hole the pully via a 20tooth lever and one to remove the nut that holds the pully .

i found this one ebay... it doenst specify if it repalces the pully holding tool (the part number atleast)

any idea if this will work? seems cheap enough.
