This thing kicks ass.

About a month ago, I decided that I was sick of having all of my DVD's on racks, so I decided to burn all of them to a hard drive and just play on my computer through my 42" plasma.

SlySoft makes the best programs to unlock DVD's and then burn them to an .ISO format file. It is about 7-8gb per movie.

Well, it is a real pain in the ass hooking my laptop up to my TV, having to get up when I want to watch a different movie, etc.

A solution was needed.

So I found the Western Digital HD Media Center. Basically you just plug your hard drive into this little box, connect HDMI to your TV and you are good to go. You just scroll through the files and play what you want. You can even fast forward, stop, etc.

The only complaint is that the controller is really small and I fear the quality of it is not the best, but I'll get over it.

This product gets two thumbs up from Cyrus.  [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

I was just commenting for the sake of us IT geeks who build our own multimedia boxes. I threw together an ITX form factor box that is actually smaller in size than my blu-ray player and substantially faster than the current offerings from the big PC manufacturers.
And besides it's 2 TBs of storage space, it also have access to the 4 TBs of stored media on my home network as well as Netflix, a blu ray drive of it's own and far bettersound processing than my $700 home theater reciever hehe.

I bought Apple TV and regret it. It's a pain in the ass to put my own content on the machine, and I can't put my own HD content on the box. It can't do netflix streaming like some of the other tv boxes. I don't rent movies from itunes, so it's not that worthwhile.

I'd sell it and get the WD HD Media Center

aside from the fact that the they're picky about the format/codec you use*, it's not really that hard to sync content to the appletv...

hell, you don't even have to sync the content to the unit, you can just add it to itunes and stream it directly from your machine.

I don't know man, it seems that this place has turned into a hook up fest.

funny story:

during one of my man "aliases" on TOB, I signed up as a female member and played a while in that court.

I can't tell you how many PM's I got from members (some of whom are on this board, but I won't reveal who out of respect) wanting my phone number, pictures, etc etc.

It was make the beast with two backsing hysterical and yet.............rather pathetic.

That's my problem with Apple.

You have to constantly hack their shit to get what you want. That is just stupid and a waste of time. That is why I don't buy apple products (yes, I have a little ipod shuffle/nano/whatever it is called, my wife bought it for me)

The fact we have to hack them makes it harder for people to goof them up.  Apple stability is partly a product of their inflexibility.

I use handbrake to get content to the apple tv, but it's not exactly a fast process.

Seems...desperate to me. Not that I am judging anyone who has met their soulmate on the web. Just saying That text conversations is not my favorite way to learn about a person. Especially considering that 95% of all internet users have a different online personality online than they do in person.
