There are no cheap new ones. There are barely cheap used ones. $7500 is about the high limit of my budget anyhow.

I understand the rationale for buying with cash.

There is no value in a high mileage pickup regardless of price.

Can you get a regular cab? Perhaps a 2X4 (maybe not so much in snow country). I can't see a truck of that vintage and mileage, particularly a brand not necessarily notorious for high mileage being worth that much.

Any chance you can wait and bid on it at the auction?

I don't fit in S10's or Rangers so they're out.

Thoughts?

define "high mileage"
and "value"

i ask only because, as with anything else.......its subjective.

ok... i hear you on the mileage thing. but again, its kind of subjective. my truck had almost 90k on it when i purchased. i have put another 120k on it since then.

and as for value....it is impossible for me to understand what value monsterlover, or you, hold for a given vehicle. it means different things to different people. do you plan to keep it forever? drive it into the ground? need a full size bed? all of those those, and other considerations combine to determine value.

Ahhhh...

We have Tacomas...the size of rangers and S10s...similar to the old hi-lux

and Tundras...full size pickups.

I don't think he'll find one of those in his price range, and my understanding is they're gas hogs.

I put more numeric constraints on value.

In all probability a 100K pickup that's 10 ish years old in the northeast won't last more than 5 years body/chassis wise.

So if you do the math it becomes simple.

You're here now.

You'll see what I mean soon enough unfortunately. :-\

yeah.....no. i gotcha on the car eating northeast thing. i have found more rust on my truck this past year than in the previous 8 years of ownership.
however, i still subscribe to the idea that if its "worth" the cost to you (the buyer) for your circumstances, and it meets your needs..........

reg cab is out due to lack of storage

2wd is out due to snow 6 months of the year

bidding on it at auction is out because they only let you in and bid if you have a dealer license

as for mileage- I'm seeing a *ton* of these up for sale with 125,000-200,000 miles on the clock.

I bought a 96 tahoe years ago with 135k on it. Never an issue.

I need something to haul:

wood
junk
bikes to the track

help skid trees when I find land and clear for a house

just don't start thinking Dodge. ;D
FHE?
I've got two Dodge trucks now, a 1500 v-8 w/118k, and a 2500 diesel w/137k.
The diesel is problem free since '01, when I had to replace a solenoid. Tires, fuel, belts, and oil, and it runs strong. All the accessories still work too.
The van has had two minor problems in the last six years, an idle control solenoid, and an A/C compressor. Other than that, same as above.

Their cars might suck, but their trucks are A#1.

Me? I'd find a Ford myself.  :)

I've never had good luck with any GM product over 100K (some with even less miles), but the Fords have been fine.
