DP ECU/Termi slip-ons vs. Boom Tubes

I have read a lot of posts regarding exhausts and find I am learning alot - thanks, everyone. My question revolves around cost and gain.

My bike is an '08 S2R1000, and I was quoted from the dealer for Termignoni slip-ons, DP air intake, DP ECU at around $1995 without the 2 hrs labor. (Ouch).

Thinking I could pull off my stock exhaust, order up Boom Tubes for around $860, then look down the road at adding the TPO Beast air pods. Then I should be able to get the ECU re-flashed?

If I go strictly with Boom Tubes on the '08 and don't mess with the air intake, would I be ok?

I like the sound of both the Termis and the Boom Tubes for different reasons, but love the look of the naked wheel from the Boom Tubes.

Not sure I want to spend $1900 plus, but it might alleviate some headaches down the road for me which would keep me from doing what the bike should do.

Boomtubes, a PCIII and a few hours of Dyno tuning and u would be set.
Prob. have all of the above for the price of the Termi's itself (not even installed)..

As far as I am aware any shop that knows what they are doing can retro-fit a PCIII from another bike onto the newer Monsters (dont quote me on this)..

If you go with Boom Tubes, you should be OK. Since Boom Tubes provide a place for the O2 sensor, I would consider getting a FatDuc ($80) to fix the lean low end, but on your bike that might not even be necessary.

The reason I have heard why there are no PCIII for the S2R1K is the stepper motor used to control the idle. No one has bothered trying to figure it out. I understand that you can get a PCIII to work, but I would suspect there would be the need for some kind of fast idle addition as well so it is not a plug and play solution on the S2R1K.

If you are looking for a reasonable progression of mods that won't kill your wallet:

1.) FatDuc
2.) Boom Tubes
3.) MonsterMash reflash to DP ECU.
4.) Airbox mods
5.) Dyno Runs
6.) Tuning of ECU by MonsterMash to reflect changes.

If you don't mess with the intake, your bike won't be getting a lot more air and you'll be fine with the Boom Tubes and stock ECU.

I have an '06 Sport 1000 with them on it. My oil temp has gone up maybe 15-20 degrees. I'm sure I could bring it back down with a FatDuc or similar O2 manipulator. I will be getting the ECU re-flashed eventually, but it's not hurting anything as is.

Plus, it looks cool and sounds great.

I agree with the above.
Currently on my 07 S2R1K I am running a set of BoomTubes with a FatDuc..
The plugs are still showing a bit of a lean condition, as well as the bike will not stop poppinon decell (no matter where the FATDUC) is.
Thus my PCIII opinion. I know Corse Ducati (in WI) has installed a number of PCIII's on newer S2R1K's and had great results..

without the DP ecu, your PCIII can only do half the job.

IME lower rpm and tps is critical. some guys do report success with "tuning" on a smaller budget but before i would mess with any exhaust on a duc, i'd be prepared to go full monty if things go wrong.

I was in your same situation trying to sort out all of the various tuning options when I bought my DP kit. While there may well be cheaper ways to go if you really know what you are doing, the kits work as advertised straight out of the box, and that is a big advantage for someone like me who just wants to ride their bike and not make it an ongoing project.

I'm really satisfied with my DP kit, but your results may vary, who knows. I do think that if you look around you might find a better deal for the kit than the price you quote (I know I did). And they are pretty easy to install yourself if you really have to pinch pennies.
