Is this a dodgey oil filter...? You be the judge...

I received this filter in what appeared to be a legitimate Ducati box, complete with serial numbers etc on it - which matched with the number on the filter - sorry, no pics of the box.

But the filter - now I've seen a few, and the ones I'm familiar with have a slightly more matte finish - call it satin black - this one is gloss.

There was also more "warning" type on the one I removed (which I binned the day before removing this one from box, so no direct photo comparison - I left the bike to drain overnight) - in various languages. This one has some, but not as much.

The white type that is on there is very shabby-looking - it's plain to see from the photos.

Finally, there is overspray of the black paint onto the filter rim - the part that is usually (IME) just bare metal.

Anyone else seen a fiilter looking like this...?

was there a clear white protective film over the top of it? it looks like someone is faking them or something.

GraGra

no film.

I wonder if anyone has another original part one laying around that we can compare to?

i clearly recall my ducati oem filter having GRAY lettering with good quality screen printing, rather than poor quality white screen printing...

Hmmm - yes, the one I pulled off definitely looked different to this one. That's not to say that they haven't "changed" their suppliers or something - but this seriously looks like a cheap knock off - at least on the outside.

I wonder what the caper is here? Why would they go to the trouble of making a cheap knock off, and putting it into a "proper" Ducati box?

This is a pic I found online of an OEM filter - the old one looked just like this. The box I got with the new one, looked just like this - but you can clearly see the difference in the printing on the filter... and the paint/rim >:(

And here's another shot from somewhere else - different printing again - no overspray though - I wonder if Ducati outsource to various suppliers?

Another legitimate looking one...

There is the possibility Ducati may be using different manufacturers for different markets to offset the cost of world wide shipping.  Or (most likely, in this case) not. I would forward these photos  and your questions to Ducati.  Counterfeiters have been doing this for a long time.  I've even seen it with inexpensive AC Delco parts

GraGra

yes, I think from what I have now found on the 'net - there seems to be some variances in the OEM filters available - but all seem to be consistent in their finish quality (from what I can see) - and do not suffer the sloppy overspray and blurred printing of my example... :-X

The boxes and stickers are probably easier to counterfeit than the filter.  There is probably some good money to be made selling bogus Ducati filters.  I noticed the "old" round Ducati logo on the *new* filter???

I've never gotten an oil filter, no matter what the vehicle, that didn't come with a plastic film over the top of the filter. If I got one without the film I would return it.

I'm in the looks sketchy camp.  Like Erik, I've never seen a new one without that film

I have one just like it.  Got it from a legit dealer in Maryland.  I also have an older one in my stash.  The new one came with a little built-in rust around the threads.  Just like most of the old Alfa stuff.  The old one is still rust free.  The old one had a spring loaded relief valve visible through the hole.  The new one has some funny looking contraption with some red sealer.  The new one is physically slightly smaller than the old one.  Same part no.

I've never had an oil filter come with plastic film. Got a pic?

I've gotten quite a few OEM Ducati filters, *none* of them have had a plastic film seal.

All of the K&N's I've gotten have a plastic film seal.

I have seen the filters that look like what the OP showed.

Oh yeah... I forgot that I don't use stockers. I always put on K&Ns... I like to nut that's welded onto the bottom with a safety wire hole so I don't have to hassle with any little caps or strap wrenches. Sorry, ignore me.
