Can anyone enlighten me as to the possibility of fitting a 5.5" rear wheel in place of the 4.5" on a 2001 750 Monster?  How much work/fabrication, parts  and parts year needed etc...

Depends on the year of your bike. You should be able to get a 5.5" wheel from a similar year and swap it over.

2001cromo

Most any ( I say most any cause some 900's came with a 4.5") 900 monster from 1993-2001 will have the proper 5.5" rear wheel. Just make sure you get the cush drive assembly and conical spacer that goes with it because they're different between the 5.5" setups and the 4.5" setups.

Also any 900 SS until 2002 has the same rear wheel.

There will be no clearance issues with a 5.5"/180 tire with your swingarm, but it might be close to your rear hugger.

The bike does turn in slightly slower with the 5.5"/180 compared to the 4.5"/160 combo. Some people put a 5.5"/170 to offeset and for slightly less weight.

Any 5.5 inch monster or supersport rim should work if it has the bearings for the same axle diameter as your current setup. depending on your front sprocket setup you may use the 900s cush drive and spacer, or the cush drive and spacer from the 750, just make sure you don't mix the cush drives and spacers between each other. Running the 750 cush drive puts the chain really close to a 180 rear, and you may see some wear to the edge of the tire from flex when cornering. If you can make the sprockets line up use the 900 cush drive. As a hint, most the front sprockets work for either setup, just flipped over I believe.
