flywheel retainer nut

So i got motivated and started working on the duc again.

however, i'm stuck and can't seem to get the nut that holds the flywheel on loose. using the old pistons (they are pretty much trashed anyways) i found a way to lock the crank from spinning, but i can't get the thing to break loose. i heated it up, nothing. i cooled down the spindle, nothing. i smacked it with a dead blow hammer, nothing. i even sprayed some wd-40 on it and came back in 30 min...nothing.

any suggestions?

Well, first I would start with an "extension". Piece of pipe at least 3ft long slipped over the handle to give leverage. If that fails, it's on to an "impact" gun. Electric is easiest, pneumatics are usually stronger but require air...

so it's a much longer breaker bar and when that doesn't work it's off to the buddy with an air gun.

The flywheel nut is on *tight*, like 130 ft lb's.    You want some leverage.

Impact wrench suggested by nichols mfg for removal. Be careful when you put it back on. Torque needs to be to proper specs use a calibrated torque wrench.

Red loctite on the nut is highly recommended to make sure it doesnt back out.

Put a jack handle on a breaker bar.

yeah because i just happen to have a floor jack around because i have a car to use it on...


and i stopped a couple of times to make sure i was turning it the correct direction. lol.

i already have one of those, and a 2 ft pipe to go on the end. looks like i need a 4 ft pipe.

ohh, i'm a weanie...a 230lb sissy pants.

sonoma...well that would be a reason for a road trip for sure.

however, i have a friend that is only 47 mi away that has the tools. i won't have to take vacation time to go there. (i'm just outside of philly)

You can apply a little heat to the nut to soften the red Loctite.  That is probably your problem.  Repeat: A little heat, you don't want to melt anything.  Install with a new nut and red loctite, or even better, the Nichols jam nut set-up   http://www.nicholsmfg.com/flywheelNuts.html

i got that with my new nichols flywheel

A heat gun will get the nut more than hot enough to soften Loctite.   I'm getting kind of nervous about the long cheaters and you are not a lightweight.  It's easy to break something, or worse, if the breaker bar pin snaps, you can break yourself. Also, in my case, when something just won't come off, there's usually some hidden reason for it.  But you mentioned double checking the thread direction so I'm kind of at a loss.  230 lbs at the end of a couple or three feet of cheater bar is a LOT of torque and something should have come loose.

I'm usually the last to suggest taking something to a dealer, but if you haven't got it loose by now, sometimes discretion is the better part of valor.

that engine ahs around 50K miles on it and the nut has never been removed.

a lot of those miles were quite hard, and it seems that if something hasn't already come loose, it's stuck on there pretty good.
