I didn't really look to hard to see if this was posted before but this is an ugly end to a pretty bike.

BumbleB

Wow! That is insane! Do you know if the rider survived?
I'm not much for quotes - tell me what you know...

sroberts152

Not a clue.  I just found the image with no story or info.

He Man

ive seen that pic before, but i always wondered what the hell caused the bikes front end to break off like that

truckinduc

the front rim Is bent to the hub, not to mention the neck being ripped off. Geeze had to hit something HARD

Popeye the Sailor

I thought Spidey had stopped racing?
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

DucHead

I bet derby know the story behind that pic.

I forget the riders' name but it was at the start of the race, everyone scrapping for position and he hits another rider from behind on his right side which mashes the front brake on and the bike flips! the pic says the rest....

I'm not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example!

That was Road America, Steve Rapp up. I worked with him that year. He ran into the back of another bike (cant remember who) and the bike flipped over when the brake lever got slammed on full.. He was rattled but made the re-start on his backup bike.

Late in the year, his crew chief, Slick Bass (who chief'd Foggy to all his WSB championships) showed up with carbon fiber hand guards that he had made for Foggy back in the day. He actually his another rider hard enough to crack them at Pikes Peak that same year. Crazy.

Superbike rookie of the year Randy Menanga was the other rider that crashed in that series of events, but the only one. He also walked away.

I believe you are right. June 10, 2000 Elkhart Lake, WI. Old school AMA SBK race, Vance and Hines Tamburini. Anyone notice #72? I believe that's Mr. Larry Pegram. [thumbsup]

Believe it or not Steve Rapp got up, brushed himself off, went back to the pits, got his back up bike, made the re-start and finished 7th place!!! Unbelievable but true! [thumbsup] [clap] [bow_down]

I remeber it as race two, but either way..

He was rattled, THAT much I remember..

I also remember that he ran into the Back of John Kocinski when John's Quick shifter malfunctioned and cut the throttle for a second, till he flipped the cut of switch.

this was friggin wicked to watch

Needless to say, not much of the bike was re-used.

Don't think they ran the two race format in 2000. But please, don't ask me to think this early in the morning and at my age! [laugh] All I do know is Rapp was extremely lucky (as was Kocinski!) not to be seriously hurt. I remember seeing the video of that wreck and it was bad. Again, amazing he got up, made the re-start and finished 7th! [clap]

RetroSBK

Yeah its crazy to think that long ago they did it...

Back then it was in response to Road Atlanta's Big Kahuna Double header weekend. There were only a couple of double headers, and it sucked then, like it does now (to work at I mean)
