It doesn't sound like anyone is suggesting that.

You think convicts should operate a business and make money?

Only if all the profits go to me, specifically. Really-why am I not already retired? I've got this lazy thing down cold.

That's slightly better.

TAMPA, Fla. – A group of Tampa inmates is offering a taste of what it's like jail — no locks, bars or handcuffs required. But you'd better have an tough stomach to use more than a dash of their "Jailhouse Fire Hot Sauce." Minimum-security Hillsborough County Jail inmates offer it in "Original," "Smoke" and "No Escape" varieties, all made from their jail-grown peppers.

They came up with the recipe and started selling it in 2005. Since then, horticulture instructor Allen Boatman estimates they've made $10,000 on the sauce. Each bottle is $7.

The income is used to keep up the greenhouse and buy basic supplies.

not saying anyone is suggesting it, but it seems kinda wrong to just point the fingers at the inmates and automatically assume they are all worthless.

Aside from that, its a minimum security prison. The majority of people who end up at these type of prisons are non violent criminals that may have just ended up on the wrong side of the street, made a bad choice and got caught. Yea they get what they had comming. But is it wrong for them to actually do something instead of building up resentment against society? They are doing something productive and if they realize they can still be part of society, great. If not, then what difference would it have made? Life time criminals will always be crooked.

Someones going to come in blasting saying, youre in jail, its not fun, you do your time and you get out. WHich is true if you've only known crime you're entire life. For the rest of society. Jail isnt just do your time and get out. its holy shit i'm in jail. I dont ever want to be here again.

Besides, the money keeps the program running, it doesnt go in their pockets.

When in Ohio some time ago I saw cars with bright yellow license plate for DUI offenders. I thought that was brilliant. Label the fukkers so everyone knows.

Wanna keep them busy, let them do highway maintenance, build houses for those less fortunate, search for mines, you get the idea.

Resent society, how about accountability. You fukked up now pay the price and then some.

They are in jail for the crime they got caught doing. Think that was the only one?

Me  I doubt it.

I completely disagree

I don't feel an inmate should be allowed to work

road maintenance, residential construction, hell even looking for mines should be done by one of our non-incarcerated 12% unemployed persons

the only work an inmate should do is clean up after themselves

Unfortunately, they don't use the "party plate" sentence all that often. I know there are some Judges that LOVE to hand them out. A guy in my neighborhood has one. I am on the fence if I like the idea or not; seems to me another reason to get profiled and pulled over.

Incarceration is all about rehabilitation, so you can become a productive member of society. Allowing prisoners to work is a good thing. It teaches them what it is like to be a good member of society.

Hopefully when this group of inmates are released, they will continue their hot sauce business. It will lead them to be a contributing member to our country instead of criminals.

and they can do that by being the prison's janitors

not running a clothing line, working on roads, wildland fires, and building houses like they do here

it takes jobs away from those who need it
