I've been away for a computer for a few weeks.  Now I'm cruising the "Cafe/2Stroke/Single/Twin/Brit/Euro/Cool Bike Pic" thread over on SVRider.  It really is a great thread.

how have the builders managed to switch the intake and exhaust ports on the vertical head?

Or am i just stupid?

Not stupid, just not old enough.

On the older bikes, the top head was front dumping -- carb in the back.  The first Ducati singles were front dumping and all the bevels too.

The early Pantahs were the same way, all the way thru the Cagiva Alazzurra, and then Cagiva (not Ducati) requested a redesign of the top head so they could stick a single carb for both heads ( a 2 barrel Weber DCNF ) on the 750Sport Nuovo (which was the precursor to the modern SS bikes). 

First bike with a rear dumping head was actually the 1985 Cagiva Elefant 650.  Ducati realized this was a good idea as it allowed for either paired carbs or a single carb setup (even though the DCNF carb was horribly tuned and did not perform well stock).
