I’ve been debating this for a while and was looking to get some input.

I’ve had my Dark 696 for just over a year.  Its got about 8700 miles on it and I absolutely love it.  I have 2 big complaints and 1 little wish:  1) Wet clutch.  It just doesn’t sound like a real Duc without the dry clutch. 2) No Single-sided swingarm.  I just love that look.  Little wish would be for just a bit more torque… just a bit.  I already did the 14T front, and I don’t really want to lose any more top end speed.  Unless there is a bore on this engine, I think I’ve about topped out what I can get out of it.

Here is the question – Should I up grade to an 1100?  I know my 2 complaints and my little wish would be resolved.  But at what cost?  The obvious is the cost of the bike.  But there is also the cost of insurance and the cost of some of the mods.

IF I move up, the plan is to buy a Red 1100, switch all the panels since the 1100 Dark is a shiny dark and not a matte black anyway.  Keeping the matte black is a big deal and adding the red frame would make my day.  It would also be nice for the new owner because they would have brand new shiny plastic bits too.  But the rest of it – I tossed the stock fender, so I would be in for another FEK. I would keep my carbon nose cone and bar ends.  I was also hoping to keep the Termis and throw the stockers back on for the new owner.  If I did that, would the air filter and ECU be able to move over too or would I need a new ECU? Or should I just go with different pipes all together?

Realistically, does anyone know what a used 696 is selling for (SF Bay Area)? Last time I looked, there is no Blue Book on it. I am up to date on all the service.  I just need to give it a once over on cleaning and it is pristine.  I also have seen the craigslist ads where people ask a lot for Ducs just because of the name.

Ideas? Comments? Concerns?  Bueller?

if you decide to pull the trigger on a gloss black, and you sell your dark first, I'd trade you my 696 dark bits for the gloss bits.

to your question, I can't help you since I'm a 696 guy too, but I have the same wish as you with the single side and power.  The wet/dry clutch issue doesn't bother me.  I"m sure you'd love the 1100, everyone I know with one loves it.

Termis, ECU and the like probably won't transfer.

I went from an M600 to an 1198s and I know what it means to double up in horse power.  If you are confident in your riding ability and have healthy respect for more power you should be fine.  If you are a loose cannon, have a ham fisted grip on the throttle, it is not the bike for you.

I can vouch for "wet clutch" sound and performance, as I too yearned for that upgrade.  Think long and hard about your riding style and make the decision you can live with.

I agree with you, but how many people will admit they are the latter? Wink

Ah yes, I understand the problem, and I truly have no answer.  I did ride behind a guy this Sunday that went over a double yellow into oncoming bike traffic, and he could have taken out all three of us because he could not countersteer a Streetfighter.

I am pretty confident in my riding ability and my self control. I have been riding for about 13 years.  I have owned some big and fast bikes - including when I wasn't a very sane rider.  I respect the bike and the road and the elements enough to know when enough is enough.

Any idea on what I can get for my 696?

Any idea what I should be looking at paying for an 1100? I see the MSRP is $11,995 but out the door price?

I've occasionally checked the 696 on ebay, most seem to go between $7000 and $8000. people that ask more than $8k usually don't sell, even with the termis'. You might want to sell them separate to optimize your return on this investment, sell the bike with the stock exhaust and ecu. Even though it's an expensive upgrade, nobody wants to pay for it.

I bought my stock dealer demo (with about 1000 miles on it) for $7500 from the dealer.

You bought a demo 1100 for $7500?

I will look into selling separately.  Thanks.

Sorry if I was unclear, I bought a 696 demo bike for $7500. I haven't seen any used 1100's come up yet.

I have seen several used 696's for sale in the SF area. It depends what upgrades you are going to include with it. I've seen one with ~ 2,000 miles & Termi CF's for $8,500. I've seen one with 1,000 miles & everything stock for $8,000. I think you should assess it and consider what is a fair price and consider what you would pay for it if you were buying it. It's tough because it's your's and obviously you want to get as much as you can for it, you'll generally think it's worth more than it really is. Same goes with cars.

On a separate note, about a month ago, I saw an ad for a 2009 dark 696 with 9 miles on it selling for $7,900 here in Los Angeles, but that was just fishy...
