has anyone ever experience the shifter arm (with the rubber boot) falling out of the shift lever? It just happened to me and I thought it was bizarre. Also, if this is common, does anyone have a source for the replacement?

I have not had the shifter arm fallen off.  But I did have the linkage, between the shifter arm and engine, fell off.  During a downshift, either a bolt broke off or the lock nut fell off.  Either way, the linkage was just dangling...  I had to limp to a Home Depot in 3rd gear to find some hardware.

It's happened to me... I was around 25k miles. I think they just get worn out. I had an extra layin' around on a broken lever so I just transferred it at the time.

Meh... no big whoop far as I'm concerned.

Wait a  minute, are you talking about the rubber toe bumper sliding off (that's what I'm talking about) or the whole lever?

If it's the whole lever, well, that's not something that should happen... our bikes shake enough that you really really really need to go through and check all the nuts and bolts on a periodic basis to ensure they're properly tightened.

I'm talking about the rubber toe bump thingy, and yes the entire extension rubber boot and all. I'll post my pic when I get home. Basically, I went to downshift and it was gone. I had to use the remaining arm of the lever to shift.

Almost happened on my bike, luckily I was checkin' the bike over at a gas stop on a *long* ride.
Spent the rest of the way home with my toe against it so it wouldn't fall out.

I countersunk the back side of the hole deeper and re-peened the 'peg'.

I dunno... "peening the peg" sounds questionable. Worse even than "countersinking the back side."

Well since I have no replacement I'll look on ebay for something then weld it in. I'd hate to waste a peice of aluminum.  [laugh]

Until you figure out something better, a bolt of appropriate length and diameter, two nuts and some black tape will work.
