It's so that if you hit your mirror on something while riding, say a trucks mirror, road sign, pedestrian, it will swing back, doesn't snap the mount, or impale the pedestrian.  Required to meet EU pedestrian safety requirements.

 If I hit a pedestrian I want him to stay down.

bump

I'm pulling clockwise with a 17mm crescent wrench to try to loosen the right side mirror. It won't budge. Its been drenched in PBlaster over the past few days. Nut is starting to round off pretty good. Am I stupid or something?
The harder I pull, the more rounded off the nut becomes...

Ive never had a problem with them. If you start wrenching on a nut and it doesn't budge, then most likely you are going the wrong way. The Mirrors are never that tight.
