Mystery red spot on floor inches away from Duc. Who else has this?
«

The last two times I returned from a ride in hot weather, I've noticed a red spot on the floor not UNDER the Monster, but inches away from it. If I stand on the left side of the bike, my hip touching the side of the tank, I look down. That area is wide open, since it's between the handlebar and the tank. And whaddya know, there's a red, quarter sized spot of what looks like red ATF or oil. It doesn't smell, and if I leave the bike sit, it doesn't grow.
It's a 2008 S2R 1000, red (not that it makes a difference in what color it is), I'm running Red Line oil, and have obsessively searched the bottom of the bike for any evidence of case leakage, banjo bolt bleed at the fittings, a drop or two of oil coming out of the airbox drain tube (I have a K&N filter, so I though perhaps a bit of oil might have trickled out)., and all surfaces are spotless and devoid of any liquid or oil. None from the clutch reservoir or brake line/reservoir either. None from the bottoms of the fork legs.
The weirdest thing is that it's not under the bike but away from it.
This happened on two occasions when I returned from a ride in 90-ish heat. The temp gauge never went over 230, and I still have a sight glass full of oil.
Or. . . I have aliens visiting and altering the gravitational field in my garage.
Anyone else have this weirdness? Or any leakage from thier S2R?

Sounds like K&N oil or maybe something from your crankcase filter.

Could it be fork oil?

Just came back from a thorough check of the bike. This time, I looked a bit more extensively under the tank. Also took off the open airbox lid and K&N filter. The front "gutter" where the filter sits into had a good amount of oil. I also noticed the filter was "thin" on oil at the top (rear). So, just a quick cleanup, spin the filter to reorient the oil in it, and reinstall.
Feeling both oils (floor sample, and from the bike) they sure felt and smelled the same, no odor. Had to be it.
What drives me bonkers is how did the oil drip to the floor without leaving any residue on the bike, frame, or any parts? Especially this time, when I rolled the bike directly into the garage after the ride, and set it up on the rearstand.
Weird.
But at least I have peace of mind that it's noting critical like a leaky crankcase, brake or clutch fluid.
PS, Thanks Trouble. You were "spot" on. . . . .

There is a drain tube on the air box that exits below the engine.
You should see it just forward of the left side cover.

Had something similar happen with my Kawasaki ZXR1200R. Couldn't for the life of me figure out where the little red puddles were coming from near the front end. I would wipe up the puddle (maybe a quarter coin in size) and days later it would reappear.
Well dumbass me finally investigated it like I should have in the first place. It was leaking fork fluid. I had what turned out to be a tiny (and I do mean tiny) rock ding in the right side stanchion tube and it was puking red fork oil past the seal where the rock ding was. The bike was stationary in my garage on a rear Pit Bull stand and I guess that loaded the forks enough to pass a little red fork oil. It went on a convoluted journey taking many interesting paths via gravity and finally dripped off the bottom of the right front caliper. I even checked the caliper and it would appear dry but that's because it had just dripped the oil and was waiting for gravity to bring some more!
By the way, the old ZRX Kawis have old school forks not "upside down" boingers. Hope you figure it out. Maybe it's a prank and it's just your friends messing with your mind!

A fellah I know with a carbed bike used starter fluid now and then, as his bike was hard to start.
Had the same problem (red spot).
He was spraying the fluid directly into the snorkels of the airbox, so the fluid was dissolving the K&N oil. It was pooling and draining.
He is a dumbass. I doubt you are, but just something to think about.

Had the samething happen to me after i cleaned and recharged my K&N filler last week. the angle of the air box causes the excess oil to drip down the left side of the air box.

That was pretty much it. Did you seen any K&N oil on your bike at all? It sounds like you and I have the same setup (DP ECU, Termis, probably the K&N open box).
My first incident was after I recharged the filter, the second was this afternoon, about 90 deg outside.

I know that Ducs can often be temperamental, but this is the first I've heard of it actually being it's "time of the month"

Sometimes I could never tell which was the oil spot culprit, the Harley or the Duck. But over time the Duck took the Leakiest Bike To Ever Grace My Garage award by a long shot. And that was
before
one of the oil lines blew at idle.
