Rain and the DP short air box

I've meant to ask this before, but the bike has been in the shop most of the rainy weather. Will rain hurt my bike with the DP short airbox, and I upgraded the oil breather to a K&N as well. Has me worried, we have mucho storms headed our way, bike is outside at work.

I haven't experienced any issues in the rain, but then again I have my fairing on. YMMV

I've got an entirely open airbox with a K&N filter.  I've ridden for hours and hours through what could only be described as a torrential downpour and experienced no problems.  While it's not ideal... riding in the rain with an open lid is not an issue.  IMHO

As long as you are not using a paper filter you should fine.

Keep your airbox drainhose clear.

I have an open airbox and have ridden the bike through 2 rainy seasons and been parked in the rain uncovered many times, haven't had any issues yet.

I have pods. And if anyone here has ridden through some nasty rain, it's me. 5k with them on and no problems at all.

I completely removed the air box, is this safe in the rain? What K&N filter could I get for an s2r 800?

me too, but i have around 10k, i have ridden thru rain where cars were pulling off the road. no issues.

Aw, am I the only one that's had problems with the rain and an open air box.  :-[ I was riding through some REALLY heavy rain for about an hour and the bike died out on me. I'm talking rain so hard that you can barely see the road and any little curve in the road makes you feel like you're going to fall because the bike feels unsteady from lack of traction. After sputtering out on the side of the road I cranked on it for what seemed like forever but was more likely only about 5 minutes and then it sputtered to life again and I was able to make it to my destination. Crappy thing was that when the bike died out, I was only 15 minutes from riding through the rain. After that it was clear sailing.

what did you do to get her started again?
when i had my airbox open(pre-pod installation) water would run down the tank and drip directly onto the K&N filter(i doubt it was directly over the velocity stack). I supose it is possible to have too much water in the fuel mix when she inhales, but then you will have to take your plugs out to get that h2o out of the cylinders. Even then there is still a small amount of water, that will vaporize after a few minutes. I am guessing the water was actually getting into some electronics...just a guess.(had the same problem with an old econoliner van, big puddles, and heavy rain, just a squirt of WD40 under the distributer got her running again)
If your airbox filled with water and wouldn't drain, you could risk serious damage to the engine....you cannot compress water. Even if the engine is really trying too...bad news.

I don't think I did anything terribly special to start up again. I cranked it while sitting on the side of the road for a bit. Fiddled with the choke and cranked. Tried throttle while cranking and then it finally started up. I wouldn't be surprised if it were something not related to the air box. I had quite a few small things that I noticed after that. I think this was before Stew noticed that my spark plug cables were broken. A couple months later my voltage regulator blew up on me. This MIGHT have been shortly before my starter solenoid gave up too.  [laugh] I still ride in the rain and haven't had anything bad happen. I avoid riding in terribly heavy rain like before though.
