Can someone give me a step by step for taking the lower triple off?

problem is the top triple is off due to it being in three pieces. i read the tutorial on it, and it won't help me. also the top bolt or whatever it is is kinda damaged.

i'll try to post pics if i didn't explain it right.

If your talking about the special nut in the center of the triple, since it is already damaged, I'd just use a pipe wrench on it. It WILL get messed up a bit.

When you get a new one, use the correct tool (or other method) to tighten it back up without damage.

thank you. was just making sure i didn't have a step that i missed.

fricking thing wont come off.

everything  is off the front end but the lower. gonna just send it to the repair shop like that and let them handle it.

i have been looking at the simple way to take the front frame off and it seems if i take the front engine bolt out and the two side bolts between the main and subframes, the front of the frame should slide right off. leaving the subframe and swingarm attached.

I'm just assuming you don't want to use the same method for the lower triple as you used for the top? ;)

right...

i have the front end off and next is the exhaust system, kickstand and rearsets. i think i'm gonna just upgrade the rearsets in the process.

i need to get some wood to prop up the engine.

anyone have an idea if i take off that front engine bolt and front frame if the rear suspension will push the bike over?

Forks.
ok i got word on some S4R forks that need new lowers (the part the brake mounts to-don't know the proper name-stanchions maybe?)- they're wrecked but been told no damage to the actual forks.
My lowers are fine.

in the end i would get S4R fully adjustable Showas with Ti-N and the 696 Radial mounts.

EDIT: well this is what i found out. and i think it was mentioned before but didn't understand the implications.
THe 696 forks are kinda unique in that they only have a damper on one side and only a spring on the other. ok no biggy, swap out the internals or stanchions and tubes with another bikes and keep your axle mounts...
well because the 696 only has one damper, the other axle mount isn't drilled on the bottom to mount a damper. so in the end either you have to get a complete front end from another bike including brakes (unless from another radial mount bike like an 848) or you have to find a way to drill a hole counter sink it for mounting a damper bolt.  anone have any ideas?

OK for those of you taking the 696 swing arm off BE CAREFUL. when you remove the shock mount the swingarm drops onto the exhaust pipe pretty hard. i caught it but woah.

anyway. got the shock out and gave up on the swingarm axle for tonight cause need to break chain and remove chainguard to get at the screw that clamps down on the swingarm shaft.

most frustrating part is the mainframe to subframe bolt. The ones you see are just covers for another inside. THAT needs a special tool. WHICH i don't have. lovely!

soooo i'm a bit frustrated can you tell  [bang]

ok came up with a solution for the frame. gonna take the whole frame off the bike and take it to the duc dealer to get the 2 side bolts and lower triple removed.
have to break the chain also as i'm taking the swing arm off.
should have that done by this weekend.
then it will be completely apart.

still haven't heard from the engine place about possible mods.

Think i've found a new lower triple and forks.
Anyone think a SF lower and forks will fit on the 696?

i'll have a pic or two (maybe... dropped my phone and it's dead) but you've all seen an engine before anyway.

Awesome that you are jumping in and pulling stuff apart! Thanks for that swing arm tip.
I just received my new Ohlins shock and Sato rear sets and I'm getting ready to install the parts myself.
I'll be waiting for more progress pics  [thumbsup]

Do you have the 696 service manual? I purchased one on-line for $6(download version) after reading thru it, I gained much confidence in tearing into my bike.
