For those who buy BoomTubes and plan of tuning w/ PCIII

Get it dynoed and get an "ADVANCED" map. As I learned today while it was getting tuned, the front and rear cylinder mappings are COMPLETELY different. Luckily I had a good tuner that was diligent enough to make sure. The rear cylinder needs way more fuel.

Havent had a chance to flog it in the hills yet but its much smoother now. Well worth it. I can run in 6th gear at 2200 rpm and the bike wont lurch.

BRG Racing in Pacheco,CA. They dont use a dynojet but rather a Mustang Eddy Current Dyno. Horsepower numbers arent inflated so you might go away scared with what the real values are (very low). KC's a really cool guy. Took about 2 1/2 hours to complete. Explained the whole process to me as well as the readings.

He uses a 4 gas analyzer instead of a lambda sensor. Supposedly more accurate since he can measure hydrocarbons, residual o2, CO2 and CO.

From what I saw, his tuning methodology for V Twins was a 4-5% CO w/ approximately a 500ppm hydrocarbon count while maintaining low resudual O2 and rate of misfires.

Go in with used tires. Because the mustang dyno imparts an actual load on the bike (from what I heard dynojets dont do this as well), it tends to fry your tires very quickly.

He was fairly meticulous to tune the bike at the same temperature range so the IAT and engine temp remained constant (within 5-10 degrees) during the test. That way you eliminate fluctuations due to the ECU changing fueling based on temperature variations.

I have been thinking about a re-flash, but I have been hearing bad things about those.  What year is your S2R 800?  I have a 2005 and it seems to run fine with the tubes, but I plan to open up the airbox or put on pods.  I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow for a TPS reset and a tank inspection.....

05 S2R 800. The PCIII was from my old M800 but per Dynojet, it was the same as on the S2R 800 so I just reused it. The advanced map was a life saver.

I took it in to the dealer today (Ducpond) to get the TPS checked/reset.  The tech figured I had enough adjustment to open up the airbox.  The throttle bodies were way out of sync as well. He took the lid off and made all of his adjustments.  It now runs like a scalded dog.  Huge improvement and now the airbox honk is louder than the boomtubes!

You're running the boom tubes without the PCIII and no issues?  I know Mark recommends the PCIII, and I'm just trying to get my budget in line.  Thanks.

Ed Zachary.  I have more restrictive baffles than he normally ships with his system.  I also have an open airbox.  The tech at DucPond was able to get it running within spec without a PCIII.  In fact, I opened up the airbox at the advice of the tech because he felt I had plenty of adjustment. I've been planning on getting pods eventually anyway.  It might run a tad on the lean side, but I haven't checked the plugs since getting it tuned up.  It runs great and has better pick-up than before (butt dyno tested).  I probably could wring some additional hp out of it with a PCIII, but it is totally fine without it. 

When I first got the tubes, my throttle bodies were WAY out of sync and I was running way lean so, on the butt dyno, it felt like I lost a lot of bottom end, which Mark found surprising.  Since the open airbox and professional tune, it runs great.
