So my bike is running LEAN - any fixes that dont require dyno and PC?

I was fortunate to get a good free Dyno - local promo and as I suspected - Im running very lean.

Current Config:

DP - ECU
DP - Airbox

Spark Exhaust (race can) and Midpipe (cat elim)

O2 sensor removed as part of the ECU update.

Anything I can do?  Or do I pay the $$$ and get a custom dyno map?

Thanks

You can read a lot from your plugs. Why dont you pull them and post a pic.

trim adjust on the ECU?

the DP bypasses the O2 sensor, right? so a fatduc manipulator is out...

have you read the closed loop mods thread? lots of info there [thumbsup]

Get the PCIII and dyno runs. You spent the money for all the nice pipe work.. might as well finish it off and make the bike use all of its potential

IMO the best/cheapest thing to do is take it to a dealer and have them adjust trim to set COs (I would specify 3.5% CO's just to make sure they get it right).  If you know someone that has a VDST you can play with knocking the trim up and see what the bike likes.  IMO its a LOT cheaper than spending upwards of $500 for a PC and dyno tuning.

It can't possibly be more than an hour labor to have it done at a dealer and you won't have to buy anything.

Did you have the DP ECU installed at a dealer?  If so they were supposed to set it up as part of the installation so you could potentially talk them into doing it for you for free.  Please note:  I'm not saying you definitely can get them to do it for free or that your necessarily entitled to it, only that its something to ask about.

had my trim adjusted and TB's synched for free while trying to diagnose my fuelling issue... sometimes dealers are cool that way

+1.  I had that done a couplea weeks ago and my bike performs MUCH MUCH better.  My gasses were all awry and not only does the bike LEAP, it's about three times easier to ride just off idle.

The influence of the trim adjustment is inversely proportional to RPM.  Read about Brad's well-documented research here:  http://www.bikeboy.org/performance.html#2v

and think about this:  http://www.techlusion.com/shopping/viewproduct.asp?pid=18

I use one on my M800 and while I realize that it can't extract every last possible fraction of a HP, the bike completely changed character (for the better) after setting it up - which does NOT require a dyno or a computer.

The TFI unit can be had for about $190 at Phat Performance (no returns on electrical stuff, caveat emptor) and LT Snyder sells the slightly more advanced and diverse Dobeck Powercard here:

http://www.desmotimes.com/ under Electrical and Lighting.

I chased the lean-running ECU problem for 2 years trying to get the trim adjustment to work.  It usually is incapable of properly enriching mixture in the upper (>4000 RPM) range, at least on my bike.

the influence of the trim adjustment is inversely proportional to injector pulse width, which is also somewhat consistant with load, which is predominantly higher throttle opening.  at low throttle openings the influence of the trim adjustment is greater with higher rpm as the pulse wdith drops as the rpm get higher for any given throttle position up to 20 or 30% at least.

if it's very wrong it'll have an effect, but it shouldn't have that much influence on a bike that's running half decently at low throttle.

i'd go looking for problems - the only difference between the dp ecu map set up and your bike is the midpipe - it's not going to make it a whole lot leaner i wouldn't think.  is the fuel filter good? (that has no relationship to mileage travelled either).  i've seen the fuel pressure regs in the plastic tank bikes come out of their flimsy mounting clips and bleed pressure off - maybe get the pressure checked.  sensors not reading correctly leaning it out?  seems odd that a dp ecu would be very wrong.  well, it doesn't really, but mostly the late ones are pretty good.

the dobeck boxes are simple, and give a result reflecting that, but it's cheap and you can do it by feel.  altho you might be surprised by how wide the range of good feel is in terms of fuelling.  you can do a pc3 by feel too, but there's just so many points to get right.
