Is there an automotive off the shelf oil filter I can use instead of buying from the dealer?

Any idea if that will void my warranty?

Do yourself a favor:

If you are concerned about the warrantee, just go pick up the Ducati filters.
If you're not concerned about the warrantee, then feel free to use the K&N filters.

Ducati is one of the more strict companies when it comes to them honoring their warrantee.

IIRC Ducati is fine with good aftermarket oil filters, just don't go sticking a Wal-Mart special or an Emgo filter on it and you'll be fine as far as warranty is concerned.  Automotive filters are common and cheap but a lot of them don't have oil pressure relief valves built into them like motorcycle oil filters do.  IMO K&Ns are the best bet.

This topic has been beat to death once or twice already :)  It's a shame that the information in the old oil thread is being lost and forgotten.  There was a Mobil lubrication engineer there, georgecls (RIP) who did wear analysis on engines and machinery for a living.  His conclusion after testing them, was that the Amsoil Eao series filters were the best by I think a pretty wide margin.  This is not to say that K&N and others aren't acceptable.

As far as using other than Ducati filters, as long as the manufacturer says the filter is for a Ducati there's no warranty issue.  If Ducati were to say that you need to use Ducati brand oil filters to keep your warranty valid, then here in the USA at least, by law they'd have to provide the filters for free.

I just bought a new Ducati oil filter and from the crappy workmanship on the outside I don't want to think about what's inside so I don't think I'll even  use it.

You will not find many filters in the US that will fit a Ducati besides the OEM filter.  Off hand, K&N, Proform, Amsoil and Fram.  There may be a couple of others.  Do not use Fram.  As far as warranty goes, if you are denied a warranty claim due to use of a non OEM part the manufacturer has to establish the failure was due to the part.

I would add HiFlo to Howie's list above.
