WTF is with the S2R1k forks

Is anyone happy with these things?


To date I've had:

Race Tech Install Gold Valves

.85kg springs

and oil unkown

I'm 170 with gear.


Seems like I can't get the front soft enough. :P


Stiction seems real rough as well.

Maybe the dude who put all that fancy stuff in would be willing to adjust it for a very nominal fee.  ;D

I don't think that's it.

I've had it done twice and the best was bringing it back to basline and small adjustments from there.

Just seems unsmooth.

Stiction?, are the tripple clamps aligned ok? IE not twisted?

Just noticed this thread after starting another thread about these forks.  They do suck, don't they?  The stiction in mine are fairly bad as well, and I swear it got even worse after I let Race-Tech respring/revalve them.  Yes, I've also verified that the forks are not binding in the clamps, and everything is aligned correctly.

[Rant] The worst thing is that the folks at Race-Tech will tell you that there is nothing wrong with them, and that you just don't know how to ride because they know exactly what springs/valves are correct for your application.  I spent about an hour in their Corona shop yesterday. After they made this bold statement, I reminded them that they installed my parts for free, because they had never seen an S2R1K in their shop prior to mine, and they didn't even know which springs and valves would fit my forks.  How can they claim to know so much about this particular application when they've never even seen the bike before? [/rant]

I've noticed that all of the spring-rate calculators are based on the assumption of 50/50 weight distribution.  We know that the Monsters have a larger percentage towards the rear, so I think for these applications you need to use a lighter spring than what they recommend.

I'm trying to source 0.8 kg/mm springs, but it seems that nobody makes them.  I had the stock progressive springs measured. They start out at 0.5 kg/mm, and progress to 0.64 kg/mm.  There is a large gap between stock and 0.85 kg/mm.

2000 996XU (extra ugly) for track days - BST carbon wheels, Ohlins shock, reworked fork, FBF exhaust, and a bunch of megacycle rocker arms. The rest of it is junk - Hey, I'm just happy that it runs...

Sold: 2002 Aprilia RST1000 for touring - De-restricted airbox, Taylormade Racing exhaust

My understanding is that the adjustment is for low speed compression, which controls things like brake dive.  The high speed compression (for bumps) is controlled by the shim stack.  I'm thinking that the compression adjustment should be kinda subtle.   Of course, the two do interact.

I replaced my rear shock with an Ohlins unit because the stocker was a turd. I have done nothing to the forks other than adjustment and they feel fine to me. They're no Ohlins, but I feel confident in the front end during brisk rides.

I think you both need to max out the rear ride height & you'll be good to go.  My bike turned so much better after that & I could actually feel the front tire.  Before that I had no idea where the limit was & the bike had a penchant for pushing wide no matter how much I hung off.  I do know that the S4r's I rode felt much nicer, maybe that would be a cheap upgrade route.
