I'm just about ready to go work fast food but before I do just thought I'd ask if anybody knows somebody that's hiring, preferably engineering but I'd be happy for anything really.  :-\

www.navy.com  ;D But seriously, if you have an engineering degree, I'm sure you can get a bonus for doing 5 years.

I actually did consider joining the navy corp of engineering for a couple hours. Then I realized that I probably wouldn't make it through the physical for any of the armed forces.  :P

As long as you have both legs and no eye patch. Actaully I think you CAN have an eye patch now. The benefits can't be matched honestly, especially if you already have a B.S. You could retire in 20 years or just do 5 and use that time to find a better job using the new experience.

What kind of engineering?  If you are an EE, I might be able to help....
Sold: 2007 S2R1000 for canyon carving and commuting - DP ECU, PCIII, BMC air filter with open box, Zard full exhaust, Race-tech fork internals, Ohlins steering damper, and a Penske 8987 triple clicker

2000 996XU (extra ugly) for track days - BST carbon wheels, Ohlins shock, reworked fork, FBF exhaust, and a bunch of megacycle rocker arms. The rest of it is junk - Hey, I'm just happy that it runs...

Sold: 2002 Aprilia RST1000 for touring - De-restricted airbox, Taylormade Racing exhaust

Chair Force is hiring for civilian engineer positions as well.

As for federal jobs, here's a list of jobs in SoCal GS-7+ (usually a BA/BS with a decent GPA in university, or shitty grades and some good work experience will get you GS-7 almost anywhere):

Stay away from TSA and Bureau of Prisons, they suck.  Everything is what you make of it.

Doesn't Cal Poly have some sort of a job referral service?

Have you tried Power Engineers in Hailey/Boise, ID?  I think they also may have a Bay Area office.  They like Cal Poly engineers.

About military service, there are a lot worse things to do for several years, you escape a Dilbert cubicle and get some adventures and experiences you just can't get anywhere else.  I wouldn't look at it as a haven from a bad economy.

+1 on usajobs.gov  Civilian government work is a good gig

I'm a SLO-ite. I haven't heard of us having any programs like that.  :-\

I'm pretty sure they used to but don't know how effective it was/is.  Might be worth a call to the alumni relations dept or whatever it  might be called.

The navy loves to hire civilian engineers to work at their shipyards. The work isn't real exciting, but the pay is decent and the job security is good. I think GS-7 is way too low (most I know hire in as GS-11s). USA Jobs or CHART will help locate open positions. DOn't forget to mention your nuclear expierence for extra consideration.
